Title: Why are you a biker?
Post by: dBfazer600 on 22 May 2013, 08:09:19 pm
So what floated your boat for you to fall in love with a two wheeled power horse between ya legs?

I mean I is asked all the time:

Isn't it dangerous? Why do you like riding? What made you get your licence?

My response to this has got shorter over time but its a combination of freedom, love bikes, that smell of high octane and oil. But recently I have to admit as the body gets older the fuel of TV coverage of MotoGP and Emergency Bikers.

My brother died and my family were going to sell his 125 to get rid of it and free up space in the garage. I said no and that I'd have a cBT within the week and that I'd take it on.

Thats about it. Obsession and lust followed soon after the buzz of scooting about the steets of the weege for the first time

Sense of freedom & being part of the scenery rather than viewing the world through a windscreen. Couldn't afford a car years ago but have loved all two wheelers since 1960! Also was a logical step from my cycling days but I am more aware of what could happen if I or someone else gets it wrong-old bones and all that!- looking forward to watching those incredible guys racing round the IOM next week :lol

Work. To begin with. I didnt have any drivin exp @ 22 and the $ was good. The chance to have a "free" bike and to get paid fer it was very appealing to me. After about 10 yrs ridin all sorts of 125/250/400/500/550/600/650 (phew!) finally bought a PROPER bike.....a fzs6 boxeye. A foccin brilliant ride as we all know. Managed to fuck that up in 4 yrs  and  decided my next bike would be a blue fast thou and not silver or red or black slow one hehe...and that i wouldnt use it fer work. Wicked bit'o kit. Fazer 6 x 10 imho. Still gettin the hang of it tho.

My wife worked away with the car, but i only walked to to work but wanted a bit of freedom.
So got a CBT and a Honda CB125, thought that would be enough until i got overtaken by a Nissan Micra :o  and i thought i need a bigger bike,

And so i got the fastest colour Fazer (silver) and never looked back, apart form life savers.

We all probably get into bikes for different reasons, but the one reason we still do it is FREEDOM. Nothing quite like a nice day a long twisty road and some warm tyres to make us all smile!

 Thats how i see it

I'm not a biker, I just ride a bike.

Reason I ride - Its just me, the bike and the road.

I swore I'd never ride a bike at about 8 years old after my dad came home after seeing a young biker killed right infront of him.
So I became a petrol head at 17. A string of fast cars, and an insatiable appetite for speed couldn't be quenched. I was in the army at the time and eventually got married, had kids, and hit 30. I ended up with wifey and kids living in Blackpool and me working near sailsbury, commuting every weekend, stuck on the m6/m5 junction watching bikes cruise on through splitting the cars.
I thought, if you can't beat em. Did my test, got a fazer 600, and sold the car.

I've been a 365 biker now for 10 years, clocked up over 200k commuting/playing, and owned some awesome bikes! Ill keep doing this now for as long as I can, body's burned out, mind can barely keep up. When people see me arrive at work piss wet through, they say why do you do it? And I say, why the f##k not!
Every minute in the saddle is a moment well spent.

plain and simple economy initially..
About 10 odd year ago I used to do a 60 mile a day commute to work in the car, cost me around £120 a month in fuel. I decided theres gotta be a cheaper way to commute so decided to buy a 125 and do the CBT route.. ended halving my fuel bills and learned to ride in all weathers.. started off with oilskins and built my kit up slowly..
A year goes by and Im enjoying the commute more than the work days so decide to do the direct access and get a slightly bigger bike (Honda CB450DX).. several bikes later and more training (IAM) Ive never looked back..  :)

I love travelling on 2 wheels. Bicycle is my 1st love, greatest, motorcycles make it faster - so I can travel to the seaside in just one day. Also, I like riding fast on the track - fun and adrenaline. Something to do with 2 wheals, leaning, sliding. I love that.

All through my teens I was did keen on cars, the lad next door was older than me when he reached 16 he had a moped, then a trail bike 175cc he passed his test on it and took me for a spin on the back, I enjoyed it but was still car mad, next he bought a Yamaha 350cc LC, I was given a pillion ride out on it I was 15 and dead keen to get a car. Was the power and speed on that bike was a whole new experience at 17 and at work I got my first motorbike.

I have never ridden a 350 LC I get tempted to buy one when ever I see one for sale.

I've always loved bikes/cars/machines as long as I can remember. I love the mechanical logic of them all and the freedom they provide.

My dad's the same, or am I the same as him? haha. He used to have bikes long before I was around and when I was young but he stopped riding for about 10 years. He got a Yamaha FZR 1000 Genesis (pre-exup valve) when I was about 15 and I went out on that with him quite a lot. I was completely hooked on the whole thing, mainly the acceleration, which it had plenty of, and being out in the open and really feeling part of the experience instead of sitting in a cage as the world goes by.

I promised dad that I'd wait until I was over 21 before I got a bike. So I passed my car test when I was 17 and got some road experience and then did my CBT when I was 21. had a CBR125 for a year and a half, passed my direct access and then had to sell my bike due to buying a house, I couldn't afford another bike until last year when I'd gone without one for a summer, I hated seeing all the bikes out when I didn't have one. Managed to get some money together and I'd always loved the foxeye 600 fazers so found one and never looked back since. Been great, perfect first big bike for me and an absolute riot to be back on 2 wheels.

Good times!

Chris

It's been on my 'to-do-by-30' list for a while. At 27 last year I decided I couldn't wait until 30 and did my CBT a week before getting married. A week after getting back from honeymoon I got my first bike, a Lexmoto 125 - yes, cheap Chinese rubbish I hear you all sigh, but it taught me to ride in all weather. I got fed up of pushing hard to do 45 and decided it was time to move up in the biking world. Started lessons mid-March and passed early this month, before buying a Fazer and selling my 4 wheels (a big step for me, I've had 4 wheels my entire life).

What do I love about it? I can't say the 'ride outs' because I never rode out (just commuted) on 125 (although I plan to change that now). I could probably say a lot of it comes down to the acceleration more than the top end speed. But what put the icing on the cake for me yesterday was this:

I left work early, so decided to go for a ride out, and ended up at the wifes workplace. We left together, and I thought this is a good opportunity to see what a bike makes to her commute. We left at 16:40 on the bikes clock, and straight away I was 400 yards further up the road because I could filter past everything. There was a couple of times I couldn't filter as there was no gap, so had to sit patiently, but most traffic was met with me jumping straight to the front.
Also being able to accelerate, overtake, slot back on on 60 roads is a dream, and allows you to make so much more progress.
So we left at 16:40, I got home at 17:14 (34 minutes), and had the bike tucked up, all my gear off and put away, dog walked, and tea in the oven by 17:24, and she got home for 17:35. So on her 55 minute commute, I took 21 minutes off it (nearly halved it). It was my first time filtering in anger on the bike too, so I could no doubt do better. I wasn't going hard, I was caught in 60 traffic a lot of the time, always do 30 in a 30, 40 in a 40 etc etc, and I managed to nearly half the commute.

That and the fact I got home with a massive cheesy grin is what does it for me I think :D

I'd wanted a bike since I was a teenager and about five years ago I thought "I've got the time, I've got the money, I don't want to be sitting here in ten years thinking 'Why didn't I do it?'" :)

And, for me, it's like surfing or skiing, the feeling of making a series of manoeuvres under perfect control just gives you a real buzz :D

used to have more fun on my moped doing 30 than 60-70 (honest!) in a cage.
always knew i'd get a bike, but after having to sell my GS500E when moving house several years ago i couldn't see how i could get back on one.
2 house moves later and i have a great 600 boxeye in the fastest colour of all..... Black !  :D

"Why aren't you a biker?"

Because
A. I am a couch slouch. Cages suit me better.
B. I am made of sugar so I am afraid of the rain.
C. I live near the artic, but I do own a snowmobile.
D. I am so goofy I can barely drive a four-wheeler. I would fall off just of thinking of it.
E. I am quite a coward.

When I was young every morning when going to school I used to see a guy  park his Triton Café racer outside the local paper shop every weekday morning, it had no kick start and he just run with the bike and jump started it, that fascinated me--and the rest is history.  :pc

When I was about 12 years old all my mates had rat bikes which they raced around some waste ground behind the Ship & Shovel pub in Barking.

After much pestering from me my Dad brought home a pretty good nick FSIE and cut the seat in half, knocked the lights and number plate off and presented it to me with the words "Push it there, if I see you riding it on the road I'll cut yer nuts off".

When I turned 16 all my mates got scooters, so I got one of them as my first legal road bike.

It was a Vespa Primavera 125 but I insured it as a 50 special as they had the same frame and looked almost identical - you could not get away with that now! .

It cost me £120 and insurance was £25 and a Centurion Pinto open face lid was £15 I think, a pair of me Mum's gardening gloves (for when it was raining) and I was good to go.

Did a year or so on that and then upgraded to a Lambretta GP200, trashed that after a year by riding it into the ground and chopped it in for...an RD250!   It was a private sale out of the Exchange & Mart, two bikers took it along with cash for the RD, I think they were going to have a ceremonial burning or something!

Most of my mates had got bored with scooters and moved onto cars so I was happy to move to more powerful motorcycles, plus I'd given up on the Mod thing as the scene was changing and I wasn't into scooter meets where you got your head kicked in by Skinheads and Scooter boys trying to flog you NF t-shirts.

Sadly both my scooters were genuine Italian bikes and in good nick, these days they would go for about £3k for the Vespa (although these are going up in price even more now) and about £7k (I kid you not) for the Italian GP.  I currently own an Italian 1963 TV175 series III and you would have to part with at least £5k if you wanted it.

Anyway, I took my test on the RD and passed, then blew it up and flogged it to get a new engine for my Cortina 1600E - well technically it was a 1600 Super with E trim and furry seats, but it was a car and girls only gave you a feel of their tits in a car (well, only the classy birds).

Step forward a year and my need for transport changed again, having established a regular pair of knockers to grope, I decided I could not put up with using public transport to get to work, so I needed another bike - enter the Suzuki GP era!

I had about 3 Suzuki GP 100s and they all gave up the ghost after a while, there was also several dodgy old Hondas CB100, Superdreams, a very short spell on a C90 then I got a VT500 (awful, awful machine) Suzuki Katana - looked good but I think the frame was bent so I never liked it and then a never ending list of shit bikes until I bought my Fazer 600 in 2002

So dear reader you may ask what has this got to do with the original question "Why are you a biker?", Well surely it's clear?

My first foray into powered two wheels was the desire to tear the arse out of the World and get noticed.

The rest of my biking desires have been based around the need to go to work to earn money.....to put petrol in my bikes and provide a bit of food and shelter along the way and still tear the arse out of the World at weekends...if I've got the energy.

I started out at 18 with my first car and have had a few since but I do certainly have a need for speed - to which I should note that I try to respect the law, its about the twisties and acceleration rather than straight up top end. I also really enjoy fettling about with mechanics and engineering

My cousin has been in to bikes for a long time, mostly since he can't afford to get a drivers licence. He's had a few different small bikes over the years and eventually I ended up trying out one of his 140cc pit bikes on his parents farm. Was great fun and dove in at the deep end of two wheelers with clutch and gear action required straight away. In any case, I took it really well and loved the feeling (even after going over the handle-bars). Later that year I got my full licence after doing DAS and 4 days after passing bought my first Fazer.

I still love cars but the bike is a bit more involved and fiddling around with bits on the bike makes you feel that much more connected when you are out on the road
