General / Motorcycle spoke keys and tension meters
« on: 12 January 2022, 08:43:55 am »
Suppose it doesn't hurt to ask - in case there are any motorbike wheel builders among the members:

Could you recommend a set of spoke keys, and tension meters (I suppose this is done by measuring the tightening torque, with all the cons of such a method) for building motorcycle wheels?

Preferably available in Germany, but the UK works fine too - USA is a bit cost-prohibitive due to shipping costs bein over the roof in most cases, for whatever reason (guess they don't like Serbia very much :)  ).

What are your thoughts on posting questions related to motorcycles that aren't Fazers/MTs, or even not Yamahas?

I got a question about a Ural motorcycle kick-start not engaging problem. I know next to nothing about Ural motorcycles. I suppose it's a spring, and/or a pawl damage problem, but can't be certain. And I suppose that not engaging when it's very cold is the first sign of trouble. But that's mostly guesswork on my part - far from the knowledgeable expert.
The first thing that came to mind was to direct the person asking to this forum. There are some very knowledgeable people here, that seem knowledgeable with (motorcycle) mechanics in general, probably not "just" the Fazers/Yamahas.

But the question is whether people are happy and willing to have non-fazer stuff here. Yes, I'm sure there is a Ural forum somewhere, but I'd rather take an "it's probably..." from the people on FOC, than "it must be..." from a forum I have no idea about.
Having more members is not necessarily good - quantity doesn't always provide more quality. But it's also not bad in and of itself.

Anyway, I suppose the best thing is to ask.

Can and should we have a non-Yamaha/non-Fazer section?
Do you think it's a good idea?
Can I direct the poor sobs who don't speak my native to this wretched place?  :)

FZS600 Fazer / Plastic FZS 600 Foxeye visor bolts?
« on: 04 October 2020, 06:37:03 am »
Asking for a friend - where can one find those small condoms, that don't fall off?

 :rollin
Seriously - a friend had their Fazer slip and fall to a side, and the only real damage were the plastic bolts holding the visor pop off. And now he's looking for new plastic ones, that will break before the visor, so he can knock his bike down again, and again.  :)

Hope everyone is doing fine. I found this interesting over the weekend to pass some time and take my thoughts off the grim present situation:

P.S: I do believe the test is flawed, because, instead of the results, it keeps showing my shoe size. Could be my browser, or something.

FZS600 Fazer / Pillon comfort dilemma
« on: 25 April 2016, 06:59:16 am »
Having been a proud owner of a FZS since 2009 - and hoping to ride it until either the bike or myself are for scraps. Anyhow, SWMBO is almost as tall as me. Being 178 cm. She tried a Honda VFR, some year 2000 model, around 600-750 cc, not really sure.

She said she loved how the saddle was almost level with the rider's part of the saddle, so she could hide from the wind better, and the foot pegs were some 5 or more cm lower, making it  a lot more comfortable for the knees.

Now, I'd rather not get the plastic clad, hard to maneuver in the city Honda beast, but rather make old Fazer comfier. Here are my questions:

1) What is the cheapest/easiest way to lower pilon footpegs?
2) Is making pilon saddle a bit higher a problem because of the wind?

FZS600 Fazer / Brake fluid on rear wheel
« on: 02 April 2016, 07:52:29 pm »
After winter, opened the garage and saw rear wheel wet from brake fluid. It has started dripping from somewhere, but very slowly. Brake fluid level is at minimum (it was almost top full), but it hasn't all leaked out.

The brake pedal is firm and feels and brakes OK. However, the fluid did leak during winter. I washed the bike and hopefully I will be able to see where the leak is from in the morning. Today I couldn't tell where it leaked from. Disc seems dry, no brake fluid on the disc, but the rear calliper is below the disc anyway.

Any tips? I'm guessing brake calliper seals are busted. Has anyone had similar problems?

Gave a good friend my old trusty boxeye for a few weeks (while I'm down with a flue). He rides Honda CB500 and a Suzuki SV650 (with aftermarket suspension). Both bikes are stripped for painting now (idiot! :)  - I told him to just ride until late autumn, painting can wait). Nice weather came and he was desperate.  :)

Anyway, man was delighted with the engine and handling. Said he didn't expect so much torque at low revs and the engine being so smooth, for both accelerating and braking with the engine. Now he's considering a FZS, after all the talk about hating inline fours etc.  :)

Well, this was fun to read:

I have one.  :)     New cost around 4000 euros, cheap parts. Does consume a little more fuel, but if you don't make much mileage - it's a no brainer.

Though the limo version is a lot better - same engine, more room and the car best for driving reverse of all the cars I've driven  - great visibility:

General / Seriously considering selling the fazer
« on: 26 August 2014, 06:55:35 am »
With pay cuts, crisis, newborn baby and insurance going 50% up!?!?!?! this year (for all the Serbian vehicles), I'm considering selling the old FZS600 and geting a small, 250 cc japanese bike. Still not sure which, but the old fazer is out for sale now.

Does anyone know if Givi top box rack can be reused on other motorcycles with minor modifications?

FZS600 Fazer / New Metzeler M7
« on: 04 June 2014, 06:32:17 am »

They come in 110 fazer front size!

I've been more than happy with the M5s, while these should be even more lasting due to dual compound rear tyre.

General / Floods in my country
« on: 21 May 2014, 05:38:54 am »
My city is OK (hope Danube won't go wild as well), but lots of towns and vilages are flooded. Government has handled this in an awfull, disorganized manner, but people are surprisingly supportive and compassionate - when asked for 2000 volunteers in Belgrade, some 20.000 people showed up. Young people made me feel proud these days - old geezers saying things about estranged Facebook generation etc, but I saw loads of youth enthusiastic to go and build barriers, carry and bring aid etc. Wet, cold. It had been raining for days. Now it's getting hot, bodies of dead catle need to be cleaned and destroyed houses rebuilt.

General / Low slide - just a rant
« on: 23 March 2014, 05:55:21 am »
Yesterday  - perfect weather, roads, company. Nice day in the country with some cycling gang. On the way back... should have been more rested and had NONE beers. Mate started braking on a slow conrer exit, when he was already past the apex. I came in too close to fast. Was supposed to just gas it, but he was getting closer and closer. Put the bike straight, started braking, then slid into the ditch past the road. Better than hitting him.  All my fault - should have kept more distance.

Not a scratch on me, but fazer is crashed. Will see the damage today. Towed it home.  Idiot.    :rolleyes

FZS600 Fazer / Sorting out forks
« on: 27 September 2013, 07:46:22 am »
Been to a track day yesterday. Forks are too soft, dive too quick.

I'm 78 kg heavy. Are original springs OK? I was thinking of adding a 2 to 5 cm pieces of plastic tube, to preload springs to a bit better. Will that be smart? I'm not on a budget to pay for new springs, but want to make forks a bit stiffer. Not too much.

Also, should I then go for 15 w oil?  A mate who races said he would recommend 90w gear oil, or 15w50 engine oil - says 15 w will be too thin if I ad 4 cm more of preload.

Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas?

General / Proxxon tools, any good?
« on: 23 July 2013, 08:54:33 am »
I found these:

Regardless of the price, are these tools any good?Proxxon is a UK company (is it?), so guess some of the FOCcers might have given it a try.

Looking for decent set of ratchet tools with sockets that won't cost an arm and a leg, but are good enough not to break themselves or strip bolts.

FZS600 Fazer / 3rd exhaust pipe a bit cooler than the others
« on: 22 June 2013, 03:44:03 pm »
What could be the cause of this? Carb were balanced some 3k kms before, this winter, by a mechanic. Perhaps not good enough? Spark plugs and cables seem OK - all the pistons seem to be running.    :(

FZS600 Fazer / Lucky, stupid idiot.
« on: 29 May 2013, 10:54:32 am »
Yesterday, it went up on the rear wheel in third gear. Pillon wanted to kill me. She loves riding fast, but not dangerously. I believe the pillon at the back was the reason it went up in 3rd gear. It was fun, won't try it again though.  Thought after first 2 geras it is safe to gass it, didn't take it slow enough.  :)

FZS600 Fazer / Car oil (yes, thin of worms...) experiences
« on: 26 May 2013, 09:03:31 am »
Not trying to open a can of worms, just looking at the maintenance bills - wife's car vs my bike. :) Got me thinking. So far I've only been using 100% synthetic motorcycle specific oil in all bikes - no problems, none whatsoever. Old, new models - all sweet... except the PRICE. Now:

I've been listening to lots of different stories. Some people swear by hundreds of thousands of trouble free kilometers with car oil in their motorbikes, while others (including the mechanic I often hang out with) say that FZS's revvy engine should use only motorcycle specific oil.

Now, I like to ride hard (when I warm the engine up of course), take it just below the red line often (11-12 k revs).

I'm interested to hear from FZS600 owners with lots of miles on their bikes that have used regular car oil. Did the engine start using up oil quickly, clutch, valves - was everything OK? How many miles did you test car oils, what change intervals?

Is it better to use full synth motorcycle oil and change at 8000 km, or use cheaper car oil at 5000 km change intervals?

I use bike for joyrides - so not even commuting. Just shorter or longer trips, or track.
