Good job, nice.

Thanks for posting the photos - the best I've seen anywhere to show how it should look.

A shame, indeed.  Good to hear all's well, though. :)

Thanks for the interest!

Hi mate, how's it going?

Just checked with a tape measure and they're an honest 36".  They have a small amount of stretch but not enough to get you out to 38".

Sorry about that.

Hi all,

Time to hang up my leathers ... or more precisely, invite someone else to hang them up for me.   :'(

With both bikes sold a while ago, I'm clearing out all my riding gear and spares.  First up my Alpinestars 2-piece leathers.  In very good condition, never crash tested and all zips/fasteners in perfect working order.

Size labels say 36" waist on the trousers, 42" chest on the jacket.  I found the jacket to be generously sized and had room to wear a full Forcefield back protector underneath.

Comes with knee sliders (not shown on photo) and all internal armour.

Asking £120 plus £15 max for shipping.  Shipping cost is an estimate.  If it comes out less, I'll charge accordingly.

Cheers!

Not sure what you've read about problems with Ivan's kits fitted to UK bikes, Sven.  What have you seen to suggest this is the case?

Sounds like the original Slip-On kit from Ivan is the one that will provide the improvements you desire, no need to do the extra work for the Full Monty.

I suggest you try the mixture screws set to 4 1/4 turns out initially.  I found that to give consistent results.

Slight correction on the previous post. :)

The basic Ivan's installation uses what he terms as the Slip-On kit.  This one was the original kit that Ivan created which works with either the standard exhaust can or an aftermarket can. Once installed, you can switch between cans without having to make any adjustments to the carb settings.

A year or two after the Gen 1 hit the market, several different aftermarket performance header systems from the likes of Akrapovic, Yoshimura and Muzzy became available and Ivan came up with a second jet kit, the MB kit (stands for Modified 'Box - ie, airbox) which has larger main jets than the Slip-On kit and also a different needle profile.

Ivan subsequently found that his MB kit could be fitted to a Gen 1 with stock headers and a less restrictive can and that provided certain other mods were made to the airbox lid, the air filter and the intake stubs, this gave gains almost comparable with the full aftermarket header systems.  This is the installation which became known as The Full Monty in the UK.

To check which version you have installed, start by checking the airbox lid and air filter.  If the snorkel inside the lid has been cut in half and you find a K&N or Pipercross type filter, you almost certainly have a Full Monty set up.

If the airbox lid and filter are standard, you could still have Ivan's Slip-On kit installed.  To confirm this, remove one of the carb tops and take out the throttle slide.  Look closely at the spring.  If one end has been clipped it will be obvious.  The standard spring end coils form a perfect circle; a clipped end will be bent down by about 30 degs and will not look the same.

If you're still unsure, look at the needle profile.  If it is tapered but totally constant along the exposed length, it's probably a stock needle.  Ivan's needle is made of polished steel and has subtle but noticeable variations in diameter.

Hope this helps. :)

« on: 08 October 2021, 01:42:20 pm »
I've fitted a few of these kits and sharp throttle response shouldn't be an issue.  What you get is smooth, linear power delivery from idle upwards, with no lean surge below 5k rpm or hesitancy on the throttle around 2 -3k rpm.

Assuming you've fitted the kit correctly, whereabouts in the rev range/throttle operation are you finding things not to your liking?

I might be wrong but I thought Luke sold that one on some years before he passed away.  Nice to see it's still in good condition and clearly been looked after if that's the case.

Those of us who've been around Fazers for a few decades ( :))  ) will recall how much of Luke's genius and commitment went into the creation of that bike, which went through quite a few evolutions before it finished up the way you see it now.

What a great way to be reminded of a really great bloke. :)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Exup
« on: 15 June 2021, 07:39:28 am »
If the valve is seized in the bushes/housing, removing it might involve almost as much effort as getting it functioning again.  Finding a replacement pulley is much easier than finding an entire working EXUP.

It would be worth trying to get it working again.  Maybe remove valve temporarily, refit the end plate with a bolt/washer to blank the spindle hole and focus on getting the valve and bushes separated then refit when they're free-spinning as they should be.

87
Did you enlarge one or two bypass holes?

It's possible that you have slightly over-enlarged the holes, which is easily done.  I suggest you set mixture screws at 4 turns out, maybe less, to compensate.

88
Good, you've replaced the main jets and by the look of it done the rest of the installation correctly.  Forgive me, but I had to ask. :)

If you're happy with the way the bike rides and the fuel consumption is OK, I suggest you don't waste time or mental energy on pulling the carbs again.  Trust Ivan.

89
If you installed it correctly, and your motor is in otherwise good condition with no exhaust, EXUP or ignition issues, those dyno numbers are probably incorrect.

Ivan spent a vast amount of time, effort and experience developing his kits.  You do not need to alter any of the jets or the needle installed height ... provided that you have fitted them correctly.

I assume you also modified the airbox lid properly, fitted a free-flow air filter and flowed the intake stubs.

What type of dyno was the operator using?  Also, the part-throttle pulls seem inconsistent between db killer in or out.

That said, the a/f ratio on the full throttle runs does indicate an overly-rich mixture in the mid-range area.  So, the question remains - do you trust the dyno and the operator, or do you trust the accuracy of your kit installation?

FWIW, it is possible to confuse the main jets for the starter jets.  If you did this and fitted Ivan's smaller main jets in place of the starter jets, the original main jets (130/132.5) would be left in place and they are definitely not compatible with Ivan's needle profile.

Cam chain won't be worn at 46k.  I know of Gen 1s with 146k on the motor and still no cam chain wear. :)

I don't see mention of you changing the O-rings on the float valve needle seats.  That would be my first port of call for any low-speed rough-running issues, along with the pilot jets and their passageways.

A company called IXIL used to do a twin pipe system, I believe.  Probably not available now, though.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Carburettor Question......
« on: 24 April 2021, 07:33:55 am »
The reason Ivan took the unusual step of enlarging the pilot circuit bypass holes was to allow more fuel to pass through them just off idle.  In his testing, he found that turning the mixture screws out as far as they would go (about 5.5 turns) wasn't enough to give him the richer a/f ratio he wanted ... the size and placement of the holes was the limiting factor.

To check if Fazer carbs have been 'Ivanized' simply remove any carb top and look at the slide spring.  If it has been cut at one end to shorten it, it will be obvious.  If you go on to remove the slide and inspect the needle, you'll find that Ivan's needles have changes in taper that are visible to the eye.  Stock needles are straight-edged along the whole length of the taper.  If you remove the needle from the slide, you'll find that stock needles have SD-130 or SD-129 stamped around the top.

Set at 3 turns out to richen the mixture at idle and just off idle.  In fact, 3.5 to 4 turns is better still.

If it starts from cold with no choke, possible that it's been 'Ivanized'.

I assume you're saying very rich because you can smell fuel at idle.  You will.  However, once you crack the throttle, you'll be glad you have that little extra richness.  It's not excessive, either.

Promising. :)

I've never used a voltmeter to set the TPS.  Just tweaked it until the tacho needle bounced between 5 - 10k.  :D

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Another Carb question!
« on: 23 March 2021, 07:03:11 am »
I can think of no logical reason for two carbs on one side of the motor to be richer than the others, Tim.  It can't be coil-related because they're 1-4, 2-3.

I set mixture screws at 4 1/4 turns out usually but back when I started doing the Full Monty installs, I followed Ivan's instructions for 4 1/2 to 5 turns.  I found that a bit rich on my own bike and reduced accordingly.  That's why I asked for a timeframe on when I might have done your bike.  If you're going to check/adjust the mixture screws, go with 4 turns out.

I'm sure the needle spacers will be correct - unless someone else has been messing since I did the job, of course.

It sounds like you're particular with maintaining the K&N filter but is it possible you might have over-oiled it?  As you can tell, I'm reaching for ideas here. :)

Also, I wonder if the Delkevic with baffle in is restricting gas flow a touch.  Might cause a bit of back-up in the EXUP chamber or alter the scavenging characteristics of the exhaust.

Do you have an ignition advancer fitted?  When did you last check your TPS setting?  Try it at 10k to advance the ignition and see if this perks up throttle response.

Sorry I can't direct you at a specific reason but this is the first time I've seen this mentioned.

Blocked pilot jets.  I'll put money on it. :)

The fuel is old, too, so that won't be helping.  Strip and clean the carbs, no need to change jets or settings.

Also, while you have the carbs out, change the O-rings on the float needle valve seats.

Hi Tim,

Please remind me when I did your bike and what exhaust can you have.

Also, what sort of riding do you do?  Are you a 'surf the torque' guy or 'redline warrior'? ;)

I'm surprised no-one else has commented on the complete absence of oil, grease, dirt or other crap on any single component of the bike in those photos.

Seriously, when was the last time you saw the underside of a Fazer look that clean unless it was sitting new on the showroom floor? :D

So after a second set of 4xv cams again with no oil ways through cam, I’ve got a set of fzs1000 cams

So. Early r1 4xv cams 98-00 will not fit from my experience, which is counter to everything Ivan has recommended in the thread posted by falcon

Sorry but you misread my posts.

I linked you to a thread answering your question about fitting the R1 head gasket but there is no reference in that by Ivan or anyone else about using 4XV R1 cams.

I said from the outset that I wasn't sure about fitting 4XV cams to the Fazer 1000.  Unfortunately, you have learned the hard way that it isn't possible.

Hope the rest of the rebuild goes well. :)
