Cleaning up/polishing frame covers - BSR67 - 21-04-25 All, I need to clean up/polish my frame covers on the basis they are looking a little scruffy. How is this best done? Looks like a lot of elbow grease to restorer them to original! Thanks BSR67 RE: Cleaning up/polishing frame covers - Trebus - 21-04-25 They are painted / powder coated I think. So really your only option is to rub down and then either paint or polish. The foot rest hangers polish up nicely with Autosol. Trebus I think you're right - they are definitely lacquered if not thinly powder coated with a clear finish. I may buy a scabby used one to experiment with first before tackling mine! Thx BSR67 RE: Cleaning up/polishing frame covers - Trebus - 24-04-25 I think I’d just give them a quick rub down and flash over with a rattle can. I did some fork lowers on a VFR many years ago using Hammerite smooth and they turned out pretty well. RE: Cleaning up/polishing frame covers - PieEater - 26-04-25 Simoniz Engine Enamel in the Aluminium finish is a good match for the engine covers so would be a good option. Mine were a bit scruffy when I bought the bike 10yrs ago. Factory finish is super thin Silver, then edges are ground on a belt sander, then lacquered, hence they look a dogs dinner yrs later. While I had the bike apart for a full resto job I spent ages wet sanding all the exposed alloy on mine 400/600/800/1000/1200/1500 grit, polish with Solvol, then Carbon effect wrap in the recessed areas, it's impossible to sand these crevices up good enough to get a decent polished finished, hence most just paint em, it's the easiest option & least amount of work, but you will rub it thru with boots at some point. I just give mine a quick rub over with Solvol a couple of times a year. RE: Cleaning up/polishing frame covers - BSR67 - 04-05-25 Wow, lovely. Thank you BSR67 |
