Front wheel removal - Pal - 30-10-24

Tyre change time, and tried to take the front wheel out.
Spindle requires a 14mm hex, didn't have one in my extensive tool kit (former mechanic).
No problem, I'll just use what Yamaha provide.
Now, I bought this bike secondhand, but unless someone has taken out the tool for the front wheel spindle, then I presume that Yamaha don't supply a toolkit that you can take the front wheel off.
My flabber has never been so ghasted.

Taking a front wheel off isn't a common job that the average biker is going to do.

Most people will get their tyres changed at a specialist workshop, rather than do the job themselves.

I'm not sure that a tool to remove the front wheel would have been included in the toolkit with the bike as new. A 14mm allen key is the answer.

Thanks for the replies lads, but I think I might just be a different era.

My Kawasaki ZRX has a toolkit, that whilst it might be the best way of doing things would be able to take both wheels out and do the valve clearances.

I realise that these days most people don't work on their bikes and get a shop to change a tyre, but no-one works on my bike but me.

Also a 14mm allen socket is not the most common tool to have in your toolbox.

I always get my local shop to change the tyres, but I always take and refir the wheels, its a straightforward enough task. Granted, a lot of home mechanics would not have a 14mm key in their tools, but like most tools, buy it once and youve got it forever. I was an engineering technician for 48 years, so I suppose I may have a reasonable selection enough to do most tasks on vehicles. If I didnt have something, Its sometimes possible to make something to do the job. Of the top of my head, I think he FZ6 front axle is a 17mm hex key for removal, I didnt have one, so I made one by welding two M10 nuts together, and that now rests in my toolbox.

When I was replacing the fork springs on my FZ6, I bought a "multi size" allen key designed for all sorts of different front axles.

It wasn't expensive and, as agricola says, once you've got it, you've got it forever.
