Who owns the forum, who started it. I only ask because I am a member of a citroen forum, I don't post there much but its gone off air and I was thinking maybe the owner has met a deadly end with covid or somthing.

Is it possible to " own " a forum?
It's a question that no-one seems to know a definitive answer to. I am a member of two other forums, one bike related and one a general forum that is associated mostly with people I have worked with overseas and here in the UK. Both seem to get revenue from ads to keep going and both have been running for over 18 years.
When the work associated forum went off line about 4 years ago I thought it was because it was not getting any revenue to keep it going, but after two months it suddenly came back on line as if nothing had happened. Questions to the admins, who are known personally by most of the members, were met with silence or evasive answers. The forum is still running but we still don't know what happened, who ultimately " owns " the forum, what revenue it gets from ads, and who really controls the forum. I had always assumed it was owned by the 4 admins as they started the forum and sent invites out to people to join but they deny ownership and say they are just running the forum voluntarily.

nobody owns it but one of our members pays the hosting charges and at least two of us have access to the admin area for the host so if something should happen to one of us, the other can add someone else and between us we can make sure it keeps running.

And pays the dues out of their own pocket -- what a great person. :thumbup .Im sure over the years there has been offers of advertising - after all this is the most popular forum for :faz in the world

mokin Wouldn't want to see any advertising though.Who I wonder is the longest member. I was a member of the old version and had to re - register for this one for some reason that I can not remember, actually I think it was because I couldn't remember my old log in details :lol

You could say that the person paying, is the person who owns it but thats not strictly true here..
The person who originally set up the site wanted no advertising and thats what we try to continue with. As for the longest member, I have no idea. We have access to teh old site still but I think there was one before that which I dont have access to so couldnt even start to guess who were members there. Everyone had to re-register on this site as the admins at the time couldn't migrate the member database over.

I've been around a good while now, almost since it started. I used to know some of the founding members, lost contact with them nowadays.
The site has moved through different phases, at one point it had to change it's name and add Unofficial as Yamaha UK got very excited. :rolleyes
We all used to contribute back in the early days things then moved on and a member took on/over the domain. We used to be able access the old site, well the one before this one which was moved to stop adverts and much better performance, as I remember or something like that. The old site contained many useful references/threads, some where where transferred or rather rewritten.

There was talk of contributions to pay the hosting fees many years ago, but that never happened. My memory is unreliable but wasn’t it Farjo who picked up the tab?

Last I spoke to him Farjo that is, I'm sure he was moving out of the country the US or Canada I think. Was good while ago and I've slept a good few times since then too, so I could well have got that wrong.
