Deklevic headers and no exup - goldfazer - 30-07-19
OK, the saga of the exup continues. I won't bore you with the details, but the selling dealer is saying that as it has a Deklevic an already, it'll run fine with Delklevic headers with no exup. My workshop says that's crap. What say you lot?

It wont run 'fine' without the exup unless its tuned to do so.
My understanding with the gen 1 is that the exup helps with low down power by creating back pressure at low rpms.
With it removed and no change to the fueling I believe it would become rough and a bit gutless down low.
I'm sure it would be rideable but I doubt it would be an improvement

It will run OK with the Delkevic headers but not as it should and no amount of tuning will fix that. The only aftermarket headers designed and proven to retain the scavenging characteristics of the OE EXUP system were made by Muzzy in the USA. These are no longer in production. All the others available, including Akrapovic, soften the power delivery below 4k rpm and in the worst cases, create a flatspot in that region which can't be tuned out via carb mods or anything else.
Technically, I think you'd have a hard time getting a satisfactory outcome through legal action because the bike does run 'OK' with the headers fitted when you bought it. Good luck, though.

i had same problem with my 2003 with a beowulf fitted,
the guys at the dealers workshop said it doesnt need it with having that can on and said they can put a eliminator to stop the tach error,but didnt make any difference, but when the main mechanic came back from being off ill, he rang me and said it needs the exup sorting its not right without it,he had it for a week, he put new cables and valve in, as he said the one in was completely siezed, and now its been done what a difference it makes,I noticed the difference in sound soon as he started it up and now runs much smoother at low and high speed.

I'm not sure about that - it has a fault and as I asked them if the exup was OK when I bought it and was told yes, I think I have a decent case. The Mrs is on the case anyway - she's a terrier.....

Fair enough ... if they didn't tell you the EXUP was effectively missing and the reason why, I agree that they withheld information pertinent to the sale. Have at 'em!

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 is very clear -

- The retailer may however refuse if they can show that your choice is disproportionately expensive compared to the alternative - this would be very hard for them because I have found a complete exhaust system on ebay with the exup for £250 - but common sense you check with the seller that the exup is not seized and moving freely (turning with bare ringers freely).
- If a fault is discovered over 6 months after the date of purchase, it will be for you to prove that the fault was there at the time of purchase. It is likely that an expert report would be needed to prove this - any yamaha dealer can write a letter stating what exhaust system the FZS1000 is supposed to come with.

Just in case anybody is looking for headers.......
I think holeshot headers are still available. Ceramic coated steel rather than stainless though. But properly researched rather than thrown together.
But wouldn't think they would be much use with standard carbs.Probably OK with Ivans kit fitted?But as Mike says will still be a touch softer than EXUP below 4000rpm.

Update, got a used exup from ebay for £154. The dealer are basically telling me to get stuffed so I'll be filling in the small claims form shortly

Finally got her back. £154 for used exup (ebay) and £175 labour. Could have been much worse! Will now fire up the small claims court

2 hrs to remove (inc. headers), drill and thread the stuck bolts. 1 hr to replace!

Actually, a bit less than 3 hrs. It was £175 inc vat and £55/hr + vat
