FZS1000 7k on tacho at startup - goldfazer - 13-07-19

Just got me a Gen 1 thou and the tacho jumps to 7k then back to 0. Is this OK or an Exup fault?

Scup fault. Probably needs a lube and adjustment.

Doesn't show a fault when running though, just on ign on.

I regularly service and lube the EXUP on mine, but it still does the same as yours on startup. It works fine once the engine is running, so I've given up worrying about it.

Correct, think of this as the bike giving you your last warning. Essentially whats happening is the exup valve is binding to the point its preventing the exup servo from moving the valve. And as a lot of fellow thou owners will tell you -
  • Cant stress this ENOUGH, always always ALWAYS!, spray copious amounts of quality penetrating fluid (not wd40) on the 3x m6*10mm allen bolts that hold the valve cover on and leave over night if you can. The absolute LAST thing you want to do is snap one of those off in the exhaust headers as its a fucking right pita to drill them out if you dont have acess to an overhead drill machine -  Most owners replace these shitty mild steel bolts with high quality stainless or better titanium bolts.
  • You will have some wear to the valve shaft ends will already have happened, but its not the end of the world.
  • once you have the valve out, check for true - my simple driveway trick is to put one end on a variable speed hand drill and rotate to check, if its out wack it with a rubber mallet. Thenroad the valve so you insert the other end in the drill - rinse and repeat untill you have a nice straight exup valve.
  • And lastly create a calendar reminder to lube the valve and the bolts with copper-ease every 3 months - it takes about 15min.

Great, thanks. I'll get some pen. oil on them and plan to get my local shop to do it and get the dealer I bought it from to pay as I asked them to check it was OK, it was meant to have been serviced and still got delivered with the fault...

regarding those small bolts, I was refering to the 3x allen bolts that hole the vale end plate on, not the 3x small m8 bolts that hold the pully cover on -

Hi all, I've just recently bought a fazer 1000 2003, and it shows the EX UP fault , i took it back to the dealers and they have fitted a eliminator,but its still showing the fault?the valve has seized open but not connected by the servo, the fault doesn't seem to happen if im going over 50 mph, just seems to be below that? but some times seems to be ok on that, and always shows when the ignition is switched on,

it also has a beowolf exhaust

any advise on why it might still show up with a eliminator connected?

If you brought it from the dealers I would tell them to fix the exup properly,  putting a eliminator on doesn't fix the problem,  the bike won't run correctly with the exup open at low revs

+1. I’d insist it was fixed correctly. Or knock £200 off so you can sort it yourself.

Does this only apply to Gen 1only,because when I bought my Gen 2 the exup had been disconnected and the cables were underneath the seat,I have a Scorpion pipe and it runs through the rev range ok,with a bit of a snatchy throttle at low revs and popping on the overrun,apart from that it seems ok.I would like to lose that snatchy throttle but figured it was because it's fuel injection and not carbs which always seem nicer on low speed pick up,does anyone think a Power commander would help?

Yes it applies. I think a PC will help, but if you have the original downpipes and the valve fitted, reconnecting the exup will be better than the PC alone.

The valve on the Gen2 is for noise / emissions purposes only and unlike the Gen1 has no effect on the bikes performance or power delivery. Again unlike the Gen1 the valve on the Gen2 is located in the OEM end can (not in the downpipes) so fitting any aftermarket can such as your Scorpion will necessitate having the cables disconnected and left in a convenient location like under the seat. So no the advice for a Gen1 EXUP valve does not apply to the Gen2.

I see 2 people have mentioned 'FC eliminator' and a 'PowerCommander', er its a Gen1 bike guys - neither of those products would apply to this bike due to it NOT being fuel injected, its a carbureted model  :pokefun

Until I read this I never realised a Power Commander was only for fuel injected motors. :o

  Haven't seen fc eliminator mentioned,  exup eliminator was mentioned this is for a gen 1 they put it on Wayne bike to stop the 7k fault, as I said it won't cure the problem of a stuck open exup! Coffee has a fuel injected bike and was asking if it was relivent for his bike and would a power commander help with his bike . Hope that sorts it for you !
