Ignition Advancer - Johnnylad123 - 25-04-19

I've bought a 4 deg ignition advancer, but when I've tried to fit it I can't get the bolt holding the original to slacken.
I do have an impact driver and an air powered rattle gun but due to it being on the crank end I didn't fancy risking it, what has everyone else used to crack the threadlock??

Re: Ignition Advancer - ogri48 - 25-04-19

heat will debond threadlock mate

Re: Ignition Advancer - mickvp - 25-04-19

I’m not recommending you do this, but I just stuck mine in first gear, on side stand, one foot on rear brake and it came loose no bother ?

Re: Ignition Advancer - Johnnylad123 - 25-04-19

I tried the in gear and brake method but no joy.

I have a heat gun for paint stripping but given there's oil and the electric pickup in close proximity to the bolt I decided against it! Any recommendation as to what heat source would me much appreciated!!

No Thread lock on that bolt (at least there shouldn't be) just 60 Nm of torque. I usually remove the hugger, brush handle through the wheel and rest on the swinging arm, into 4 gear and 1/2 drive and a long breaker bar.

Re: Ignition Advancer - ogri48 - 25-04-19

eeeek! all sounds very worrying lol. is the advancer worth it? I tried one on my bandit twelve years back and it actually lost bottom end...been sceptical of em ever since

Re: Ignition Advancer - Johnnylad123 - 26-04-19

That's my thoughts now Ogri, it's already cost me a gasket so for all the faff most likely won't do it.
Ebay it is!

Re: Ignition Advancer - ogri48 - 26-04-19

:thumbup I even had the bandit dynoed at bsd to check, it definitely mullered the bottom end. Though ive read good things on here in the past. I always think my thou has ample bottom  (especially after ivanising it) then I jump on me cb1300 and suddenly the thou lump feels like a sports 600 lol

Re: Ignition Advancer - PieEater - 26-04-19

Advancer gives a noticeable boost to bottom end and makes cold starting a tad easier, trade off is a slight loss of top end but unless you spend the majority of the time caning the bike the benefits easily outway the costs. Having said that I wouldn't say that it's worth risking engine damage to fit and in this case it's probably best leaving well enough alone unless you take it to a shop to have it fitted and they assume all responsibility .........

Re: Ignition Advancer - Johnnylad123 - 26-04-19

My thoughts exactly PieEater, I reckon the rattle gun would do the trick but at what cost to the bottom end of the motor. Just not worth it I'm afraid.

Re: Ignition Advancer - kebab19 - 26-04-19

Providing you have something to balance it on, you could could rest the tip of a soldering iron to the bolt and leave it touching for for 5 - 10 minutes? It would be a more precise way to apply heat to a specific area without risking damage to the surrounding parts.

Where does everyone get their advancers from?

Re: Ignition Advancer - CatalinU - 10-12-19

Been reading this and thinking myself on changing it. What are downsides of having the 4 degree plate on?

Slight reduction in top end power that in real life you will probably never notice.

Re: Ignition Advancer - CatalinU - 11-12-19
