Gilles Rearsets: Brake lever return - BMCfaz - 27-11-18

Finally got round to fitting the Gilles rearsets I bought from Fazed Out a couple of months ago, all fine and dandy. However there is no return spring on the brake lever, unlike the standard pegs or the LSL rearsets I had before.


This means that the lever doesn't return to its original position after braking, meaning the pads drag on the disc and the brake light stays on.


There is no spring shown on the parts list and nowhere to fit one anyway.


Has anyone who has fitted Gilles noticed this problem on their set-up and is there a simple solution? Or, failing that, a complicated one, otherwise they'd be an MOT fail for having the brake light on all the time.

You should have a spring connected to your brake light switch. Check the tension on that or if it's still there.
It'll be on the inside where the lever pivots, if that make any sense.
Failing that, your switch may be sticking.

Always good to lubricate all moving parts too. Give them a good spray up.

I see where you're coming from, dazza, but the spring on the switch, and the switch itself, are not really designed to return the lever, that's why the standard lever (& the LSL set-up) have seperate return springs.


I'll give everything a good clean up and lube, but I wouldn't be confident that there's a strong enough internal spring in the switch (if any) to return the lever every time.

Failing that, I'd look at the adjustment on the slave cylinder seen at the rear of the photograph.
It could just be that the positioning of the gillies is different to what was there before.

Cleaned and lubed it all up, but stll not returning as expected....


So, found a screw that didn't seem to be doing anything and changed it for a longer bolt, then connected the return spring from my LSL rearsets from that to the hole for the brake switch spring. (see photo)


The lever now has some resistance and returns as the standard lever would.
