Centre stand or not? - deeteefifty - 02-09-18

One of the last jobs I want to sort out on my recently bought Fazer 600 is the lack of centre stand, but before doing a search I found the mounting lugs have been chopped off. The repair will need some bracketry welding on from an uncomfortable position or possibly the bike part stripped/drained then dropped on it's side.
Question is, is it worth it? I've managed over the years with only sidestands, jacks or paddock stands in the shed. Or in your experience is there some peculiarities about these bikes where I'll wish or find I need one.

Re: Centre stand or not? - mtread - 02-09-18

No, nothing special. I'd just make do with a side stand and use a paddock stand when necessary. Wonder why they were chopped off?

Re: Centre stand or not? - deeteefifty - 02-09-18

Thanks mtread. I'm guessing the attack took place because of fancy pipes, seized hinge bolts or a desire for lightness.

Re: Centre stand or not? - Artherjob - 02-09-18

I've recently got a Fazer with after market pipes and the centre stand was touching the pipes when raised. Bit of a tweek sorted it out. Seems a bit unnecessary to cut the lugs off.

Re: Centre stand or not? - deeteefifty - 02-09-18

Thanks Artherjob, it's all part of the mystery of old bikes, like what were those disconnected wires for??

Re: Centre stand or not? - Bretty - 02-09-18

I just swapped the centre stand on mine. I just took the tank off and layed the bike down on a cushion (old sofa seat). No need to drain anything.

It is a bit off a ballache to get to.

I do use my centre stand a lot. To spin the back wheel when lubing the chain amd to check the oil level.

Re: Centre stand or not? - deeteefifty - 02-09-18

Thanks bretty, I wish it was as easy as just fitting one back on, but there's nothing to fit one to?

Still don't know why it does that?

My aftermarket exhaust has a metal plate coming off it so that the centre stand deliberately rests on it with a rubber bung.
Like Bretty i use my centre stand all the time when working on the bike, and i would most certainly be a bit lost without it being there.
I'm fortunate to have access to an air line at work to check the tyre pressures, so even simple jobs like that mean i can quickly spin the wheels into position to pump the tyres up while the bike's on the centre stand, especially as sometimes they're loading a lorry next to me so i need to be done and out of their way as quickly as possible.

[/quote]Thats exactly how the oem one works, or rather the other way around as the bung is on the stand,(or is that what you were saying ? picture is my repair job on it.
Deeteefifty/ if it helps I have posted my stand referb here http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,20049.msg231855.html#msg231855 with pictures of the lugs[Image: index.php?action=dlattach;topic=20049.0;...4531;image]

Re: Centre stand or not? - deeteefifty - 03-09-18

Thanks chaps. Fazersharp that's a good overhaul you've done, the photos will help me to work with what I have left. 1st I need a stand then I'll add it onto the winter to do list?. I've tried uploading a photo but it must be deemed too disgusting to be deemed acceptable..

Re: Centre stand or not? - fazersharp - 03-09-18

Gotta say though that despite my best efforts - with the pictures to prove it that it is starting to rustĀ  :rolleyes -Remember I do not commute and only ride in the dry. Next time if I can be bothered to do it again I will get it powder coated properly.
