LED Flashers - Geedog - 03-07-18
Hi all
So I’ve got some LED flashers on the bike now and swapped the old flasher relay or an LED one...can anyone enlighten me as to why they dont flash? They just light up once and stay on....do I need inline resistors too?
Help?!

Sounds like you have a dodgy relay. Is this with the engine running as well as when its off?
If you put the original one back in do they flash too fast? The LED's may already have resistors fitted making the resistance too high so you would need to go back to the standard relay if they flash normally with the standard relay

They flash with the original but too fast and not all of the LEDs light up..
With the new relay they all light up but dont ‘blink’ with the bike running or off.
They dont pear to have any resistors fitted to them..

I reckon it's a dodgy relay too.
The original one is doing what is expected when you put LED indicators on. Not all the LEDs are lighting up because it's going too fast so don't worry about that part.

If I were to ut the original relay back on and use in line resistors would/should that work?

yes, but its a bodge. Just order a new relay.

The in-line resistors are easy to fit. They're not really a bodge as they are simply increasing the resistance load to match what ordinary bulbs would be - some LED indicators have them built in.
Buying and fitting one relay is easier though.

It seems I now have a relay that works...but when the bike is running anything more than an idle the flashers speed up to match...do I need to fit those resistors still then?

How fast are they flashing at idle/off and how fast at say 5K?

At idle they flash at the speed you would expect them to, about 60-70 per minute, as the Revs increase, so does the speed of flashing so at 2000 they are about twice as fast, at 5000 they flash at about 200x per minute...

Check your battery voltage at those speeds. I suspect you may have a problem with your rectifier.

Apologies for the radio silence...anyway, I checked the voltage on battery idling is 12 point something, when revving up to about 4-5k voltage goes up to 13.5 ish...is that normal?

I would need to be there in person to make a proper judgement but at first glance of your figures I'd agree with BBrown1664 in that it looks a little low. Not massively low, just a bit. This can be causing you a few problems. Before I go suggesting things that might be expensive...
Did the original indicators work properly or did you have problems with those too?

One thing I haven’t mentioned is that the new LED lights are the ‘flowing’ type indicators, (12 LEDs on each)

I've got those on mine. I fitted an adjustable flasher relay as I got some cheap. I haven't used in-line resistors as I didn't need any because the relay has sorted that out.
I get no difference in flash rate with engine running or not.
As your original indicators worked fine I suspect that it is still the relay.
What parts have you actually fitted to the bike?

Are you asking what brand or what part? I have fitted new relay x2, first from amazon didn’t work, 2nd one from eBay did but with the current problem...what have you used and where can I source from?

I bought 5 of these - the first one I fitted didn't work but the 2nd one did.

I didn't mind waiting a month for them to arrive, you can get them quicker from a UK seller but they will cost more.
