Fazer 600 won't start - gasmanxxxr1 - 28-01-18
Hi Guys
Had my Fazer in the garage since late October.
I tried to start it yesterday with no joy.
It's turning over, doing all the right things just won't start.
So last night I put the battery on charge, drained the carb bowls, re-set the spark gaps.
This morning it started briefly for a second climbed 7k revs but i couldn't catch it. It died and wouldn't start again.
Now what I'm thinking is when i put it away it was running sweet. I went against my better judgement and wintered it up on a near empty fuel tank.
Has moisture got in to the fuel? The garage is unheated and damp, detached from the house. Maybe i should drain all the fuel and refill with high octane?

i wouldnt use high octane mine didnt like it at all and im sure i read the same from others
when you drained the carb bowls did you look to see if there was any water in there??
its always near empty tanks that gather the most moisture so there is a good chance that is the problem
just drain whats left into 2lt pop bottles and you will see if there is water (it settles at bottom) once its settled then you can either syphon the fuel from above the water (personally i would just use this in your lawnmower if you have one) re drain your float bowls aswell so its a completly dry system then top up with fresh fuel and reprime, hopefully good to go

as the punk says drain all the fuel put fresh in and try from their furl could be off and moisture in it on a side not high octane makes no difference to running on mine same power and reliability

yeah i just realised i say that having only used high octane before i fixed the badly balanced carbs - i might try a tank full on my next long ride out to see how it is now all is sorted

My bike loves the 99 octane fuel, but i generally always use 97.
II do notice a difference if i ever use 95 though, so tend not to bother with it at all.

Is the fuel pump clicking when you switch the ignition on?

if it still dont come on give it a whack with a screwdriver - you can see where the future go's here
carpet cleaner (george) only needed a reasuring tap to get the pump working again yesterday

Just a random one but as you 'wintered it up' did you turn the fuel switch off?
Wondering if you have "sticky bits" in the carbs as well.
If the fuel pump clicks away at the beginning okay and you know the tap is switched on, try starting it a few times then hold the front brake and bounce the front end of the bike a few times and see if you can dislodge any stuck parts by swishing fuel about.
If you suspect any moisture in the tank you'd have most likely emptied it when draining the bowls, but putting 300ml of 99% Isopropyl Alcohol will get rid of any water and bind with it then simply burn it off as fuel. Add it to a full tank of fresh fuel though.
My bike just suffered a couple of bouts of carb icing recently, first time in years, but also the first winter that i hadn't used I.P.A.
Nursed the bike back home, stuck a cupful of I.P.A. in the fuel and it ran perfectly within ten minutes, and never missed a beat all the way into work.
My bike is an alcoholic, and needs a livener to get going. :b

Are you using the choke?
If not, try it.
If it runs on choke it will be gummed up pilot jets. Loads of people have had this problem this year. Took the carbs off my dads bike last weekend and ended up using drain cleaner to clean the jets along with a very fine bit of wire.

two most common reasons for a bike not starting is: No Spark or No Fuel.
Figure out which one it is first and then we can expand the options to suit

UPDATE
After trying several different things I decided that the fuel may have got some moisture in it. I drained the tank and carb bowls (about 5 litres) and stuck some fresh fuel with a good dose of stp fuel additive. It started first time and ran very well

Standard unleaded in the uk contains ethanol. Ethanol absorbs water.
Super does not contain ethanol
Ethanol rots brass/rubber seals jets etc.
If the bike is older than 15 years, then I wouldnt use standard unleaded
I use super in my 20 year old Virago 750 and my 9 year old FZ6 S2 Fazer, without any problems
