BMW rear shock preload - Dea-ville - 24-11-17
Hi all, managed to purchase a brand new BMW S1000RR rear shock for my gen 1 thou, had a new top bush machined rather than go with the spacers & set every thing midway as a starting point. My question is how much thread on the preload should be showing? again, as a starting point. Cheers.

How long is a piece of string, depends on your weight riding style etc etc, I would start with looking at the sag rather than how many threads should be showing, I can't remember totally (no doubt someone else will come forward and educate me) but around 20% static sag would be a starting point, go for a ride and see how it feels and go from there.
I have a BMW shock on my Gen1 but with a Ohlins Spring supplied by MCT for my weight and riding style , I'm a fat bastard (18+ stone with all my riding kit on) with a moderately fast riding style. so can't say more than I already have on your situation.

I know the sag rate will need setting but with the rest of the settings being set at midway i just wanted a rough idea for the preload as its a right twat to do a lot of alteration on the preload when its in, sorry, should have mentioned i'm around 13st in gear.

Just stick in on as is. The preload is easy enough to adjust with a c spanner, easier than the std shock. You want about 25-30mm of sag ideally. I seem to remember the bmw spring being relatively weak but if your 13 stone it should be fine.
