its 3AM and i just got back in and im too cold to investigate other than looking at diagrams and ask here
the 2000 model doesnt have headlight relays does it ?
if it does where abouts should i be looking
- im running twin dominator headlights with osram night breakers and not as impressed impressed as i should be
thinking of going direct wiring with a relay (last 30 miles have been a nightmare as there was no1 to follow)
if there is no oem relay i will just rip the loom and hide a relay under the tank
oem factory relay will get replaced if there is one as standard

As far as I can remember, there are no relays. The cable from under the tank though is very thin so limits the current that can get to the bulbs. To improve this, use the existing wires from under the tank to the lights to power a relay and run THICK (in comparison) cables direct from the battery via the relay.

thats exactly what im planning
if my memory of electrical wiring resistance is still working then i think it needs to be 10-12 guage wire to run 120W of lights
just have to find the right relay now
if i can only find a switchover relay then i think i will have to add 2 relays 1 on/off, 1 hi/low

One for high and one for low.
Adding one for on-off would prevent your pass switch from working without complicating the wiring.

Was thinking of doing the same, but with xenon bulbs and using the green cable to trigger the relay

well i got some relays ordered with the connector blocks and found some thick enough (i think) wire
just got to find some time next week to get it all fired in there

its not your bulbs its the dominators headlights they are crap and dont have a good rating at all i tried them and binned them for the same reason

thankfully they are just to do the job untill i rip it off the road for a rebuild but i might aswell make them as good as i can for now
not spending a fortune on a headlight that might not fit whichever front end i decide to fit in the future

Done the job just great, the green cable going into the white junction block inside the black plastic box triggers my relay which powers the low beam on the right hand lamp.
Upgraded both bulbs to xenon and been up an unlit motorway tonight, now gives plenty of light.

update on this is
the relay mod does improve things
HOWEVER as metioned above the dominator headlights are shite
i looked inside and could see the reflector is extremly mottled (not smooth)
had a similar problem years ago with a bates headlight having lots its shine and fixed it with a bit of autosol with great results
DO NOT DO THIS WITH DOMINATORS - it removed the chrome in seconds and its now a shiney black paint
but it gets funnier - ordered a basic round headlight to do the job as now hitting the dark nights of winter (waiting on delivery)
thought i would hit the now useless headlight with paint stripper to remove the black and polish the steel just to help a bit, but the stripper didnt do anything to the black - or the chrome stuff that came off with autosol
strange things happen in my workshop that confuse not only me but also my father that just laughed and said - 'well that was made in china' lol

I fitted twin Bates headlamps on an FJ1200 and put 120 Watt bulbs in to try and improve things as they were awful headlamps, I then did the relay mod as someone pointed out that the existing wiring would struggle (or even fry) with the 120W bulbs. There was improvement but when I was parked next to my mates standard SV1000 his headlamp was FAR BETTER than my twin headlamps.

It's the reflective part of the unit that's shite, rather than the actual bulbs.

Oh yeah. The headlamps were crap. I only fitted relays and brighter bulbs to try and improve a bad situation. It had limited effect.

i have twin mini bates on the chop and they are poor and they use old style bulbs
the 5 3/4" bates i used was a lot better and had a H4 bulb (had osram night racer in that - still have the helmet shaped box it came in)
- got to be carefull firing in crazy wattage bulbs had a bike in the other week and it fried the wiring cause they put in a 90W h4 bulb and the wiring couldnt cope
