Rear master cylinder seals - Shappaeye - 02-09-17 Hello! I recently had to replace pistons and seals on my rear caliper as the rear brake completely failed. While I was taking it all to pieces, I thought replace the brake line and seals in the master cylinder. Brake line not a problem, seals in the master cylinder on the other hand are like rocking horse s..t! I went into my local biker shop, they aren't listed unless you got to Yamaha which are 50 a set. Anyone had a similar experience? Do they ever fail? Is that why they aren't around or common as others? I am wondering if after stripping the plunger, etc out of the cylinder perhaps I should just rebuild it and hope a clean out was all it needed. Re: Rear master cylinder seals - Fazerider - 02-09-17 I believe the rear master cylinder is the same as on the Diversion, possibly other models too. Yamaha do recommend changing the rubber parts of the baking system every 4 years... obviously that's a bit extreme, but 4 times that? I'd change them. >update< It looks like some of Yamaha's 250cc offerings used the same component. DYOR, but I think this will suit... (though it may have spent 20 years on a shelf). The flow was very poor from both bleed nipples and it wouldn't engage the pistons properly. Thanks for the Fowlers link, thats where my local bike shop said I should try. 50 quid it is then. Try undoing the banjo bolt and using it like a bleed nipple to bleed the air out. And take caliper off bracket and hose clamp off swinging arm and tie caliper to pillion footrest so it is higher than the master cylinder and try to bleed it there to help the bubbles move along the hose.
