05 FZS 1000 catalytic converters - Ricky - 25-08-17
Hi, I have a 05 model which I believe has a cat fitted. 05 was the only year that one was fitted and a change to the ECU.
I am told it is fitted in the down tubes as the 4 go in 1 where the link pipe fits. I am told it is small and very simple design with no lampbard sensor fitted.
My bike is a American import but again all 05 have the cat fitted, so they should be no difference.
Looked in the Haynes manual but there is no mention of it, does any one know any thing about them? Are they worth taking out?can they be taken out?how easy is it to do? What is changed in the ECU? Will they be a power difference?

Hi Richard.
I discovered last week that the stock silencer I acquired last year is from an 05 model. The cat part is in the link pipe itself, not the outlet from the EXUP collector box.
If you remove your silencer you'll see the cat consists of a circle of about six to eight 1cm diameter tubes which are tacked welded to each other. I haven't looked deeper inside with a torch but it looks like the whole assembly is held in the link pipe by a couple of tacked tags. Should be simple enough to remove but it doesn't look as though it's restrictive to any significant extent. It's certainly not the dense honeycomb assembly we typically associate with cat cons.
Frankly, I see no point in trying to remove the cat from the stock silencer. If it's performance gains you're after, you would be slinging the whole lot under the workbench and replacing it with a slip on.
As for the ECU, I suppose there might be minor changes to the ignition timing but I don't recall anyone reporting different power output figures for the 05 model compared with the preceding years.

Hi Mike , thanks for your reply. I have a slip on can with a link pipe so that is good news. I am surprised that there is so little information out there on the subject, and wander what they did change on the ECU.

The change in the ECU might not even be related to the cat, Richard. As you said, there's no lambda sensor or wiring associated with the exhaust. The fact that there's not much info on it suggests that there was nothing significant in the changes in the first place.

I have a 05 , the cat is in the bottom of the header and the link pipe , sorry to contradict you Mike, it is easy to get out with a drill and old chizell, ?

No apology needed - happy that someone knows the correct info on this.
I take it that there's a cat component in the outlet of the collector box as well as the tubes I described in the link pipe. I didn't know that ... I only have the silencer from an 05 bike so was unaware of the additional bit upstream.

I've been looking at this on my 05 bike I've just aquired, I'm not keen on loud pipes so I plan on keeping mine but remove the cat.
One thing I did notice is the cattery version of the silencer is about 2 pounds heavier. .

Hi , sorry just seen this , not a lot different power wise you would notice , with other mods IE full monty slip on should be more free flowing, and save a bit of weight

I de-catted a manifold once of a sports car that I owned, in fact they were pre cats in the manifold, and it had the main cat in the silencer box. The precats, and my understanding is that the main exhaust cat are made of a porcelain material and can be removed with a hammer and steel rod just smash the stuff out it's just a few minute job. I actually fitted a new Stainless Steel de-catted manifold

Just wandering it is worth taking off my slip on can and trying to remove the cat in the headers. Will I actually feel any power difference? Is it worth the trouble?
