FZS 600 Loosing power, cutting out and backfire --- HELP ME!!! - adeejaysdelight - 31-07-17

Hi Guy's,

Sorry about that last message/f-up.

No been on for ages, and for good reason. But I already went in to that kind of.

On to the Fazer. So I was out for a run and as I was in the process of an overtake when the power cut out on me. Baws I thought as I watched the car pass on my inside and the driver giving me a friendly gesture. Silent and awkward sums it up best. So I thumbed the starter and it burst in to life with a backfire. I drove on some 25-30 miles at a steady pace and about 6000 rpm. All seemed ok so I stepped it up gradually to 10000 rpm. The the power died and the engine cut out. Again, once I came to a hault, I thumbed the starter and it banged in to life with a backfire.

This is now the theme of the bike. The electrics are good. The engine sounds fine on idle. It is serviced, I fitted a new battery and the bike has been getting used regularly. It seemed to start happening for no reason.

Any ideas foccers? Hope you are all doing well and living life.

Best rewrite that as it went all weird after the wedding bit!

Re: FZS 600 Loosing power, cutting out and backfire --- HELP ME!!! - adeejaysdelight - 31-07-17

Hi Guys,

I haven't been on here for ages and I feel a bit guilty to start with a question. I've been busy with a new(sh) relationship, touring Europe on the bike, starting a business and planning a wedding, so at least you know I haven't just been sitting on my arse watching porn. I mean, I've been doing that too...Right, so I'm having a problem with my beloved Fazer. She's about 42000 miles now and still looking great. I was out for a run and as I made an overtake the power died on the engine and it cut out. I had to go back behind the car and pull over in an awkward silence. I thumbed the starter and with a mighty backfire it burst in to life. I carried on for about 25-30 miles and everything seemed fine at a steady pace around 6000rpm or so. I gradually built the revs up to a sustained 9000-10000rpm. It stammered and I eased off and then it cut out again. After I came to a stop it started again on the starter with another backfire.

Now the power goes and the engine dies if you try to give it anything like a twist. It sounds fine at idle. The electrics are fine. I put a brand new battery in it last week. It's serviced and hasn't been lying around unused. It j
ust started doing it and now I have lost all confidence in it because the power isn't there when I need it. Any ideas from the foccer massiff?

Hope all you guy's are doing good and enjoying life out there. Thanks

Is the bike behaving normally at low revs, like under 3000rpm? Do a quick TPS check.

Is the rev counter needle stable on idle, regardless of how it sounds?

Check HT leads haven't come loose from the caps.

Ridden in any serious rain recently, or hosed the bike down at all?

Not the classic pinched breather hose is it?

Re: FZS 600 Loosing power, cutting out and backfire --- HELP ME!!! - Bretty - 02-08-17

That's going to be an electrical fault upstream of the coils. If a coil or cap had a fault the engine would still fun bit run rough.

Your losing spark, hence the cylinder as pumping unburnt fuel into the exhaust which then pops when you fire the bike up.

It could be a knackered switch, loose connection or damaged wire around the side stand (common issue) or kill switch.

The wiring diagram in the manual might help.

Too warm for that.

I'd say it had to be electrical with it being a sudden and complete cut-out.

Re: FZS 600 Loosing power, cutting out and backfire --- HELP ME!!! - adeejaysdelight - 11-08-17

Hi guy's. I've a wee update for you.

So I stripped the old coils off and removed the spark plugs. Coil and plug 3 were in a shitty condition. Rust and that white furring all over. The plugs aren't that old, as in changed the service before last (two years and maybe 6000 miles), but the coils look original.

I ordered new iridium plugs and sourced a set of coils in good condition (with the bracket, fuel pump, filter and hoses) from a 17,000 mile bike. My bike is 42,000 so if I get half of the 25,000 difference from them I'll be delighted. I connected everything back up and took it round the block and it seems fine.

The weather is good tomorrow so I'm going to take it for a proper run up to Tyndrum or something. I'm confident that the problem is sorted though, so thank you again foccers. Another Fazer brought back to life ? ?

Good result  Smile

Ok, change of plan. The bike is still f**ked! So I finally got out for a run and it cut out, again. I started it up, no backfire this time. I got another 20 miles and gave it some throttle. It cut out. I started it up no problem, and no backfire again. However, there was quite a strong smell of petrol this time. I brought it home at a steady pace and it ran fine all the way. It's only when I try and push on it wants to quit. Honestly, I'm going mental here. I've been working like a beast and when I do eventually get some time off, I don't want to be rolling about the garage floor. I want to be out riding.

Foccers...Assemble!!!

Re: FZS 600 Loosing power, cutting out and backfire --- HELP ME!!! - His Dudeness - 24-08-17

Have you checked the air filter? If that's clogged up and causing a restriction to airflow when you give it a burst of throttle you'll flood the engine. That's the easiest thing to rule out so I'd start there.

Shit in the tank?

I don't reckon taking a shit in the tank is really gonna help matters.  :lol

I've been up to my eye's with work stuff. Hopefully get a look at the bike during the week. The air filter is a K & N, dunno if that makes a difference. It's been in there for years though. It was one of the first things I did to the bike. It could be some crud in the tank I suppose. How can I check that?

I would certainly give the K&N a proper clean and re-oil, we get the aftermath of other peoples dust storms and volcanic ash so they can clog up easier than expected.
