Price for MOT - thought it was £29.65, garage invoicing for £50 - Buzz - 20-07-17 Morning All, I dropped my bike off this morning at a place I've not used before for the MOT but I took it there this time as it's near work and they sorted out my seized rear caliper in record quick time. I just got a text saying it'll be £50, but I thought the max anyone can charge was £29.65. https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/mot-test-fees Have I got any right to quote the Govt rules or can they charge what they like? Cheers...Dan EDIT: - Doh!! I've just noticed that their website says "Same day MOTs £5O" but is this even legal? Re: Price for MOT - thought it was £29.65, garage invoicing for £50 - celticbiker - 20-07-17 Err, all MOT's are same day aren't they? You book it in, ride down, wait, then ride away, I've never had to leave a bike overnight. If you are in a hurry and call in the morning and want it done the same day then yes, they can charge a premium for the extra service of doing it the same day. Re: Price for MOT - thought it was £29.65, garage invoicing for £50 - darrsi - 20-07-17 Did you book it in as urgent, ie: had yours run out? If you did then they could charge what they want i s'pose for the privilege, although the actual MOT price would still be the same regardless, they can't change the price of that as it's a set price. Bit cheeky though if they just fitted you in on the same day without you having any knowledge of a possible extra charge. If this is the case i'd question it anyway, then simply go somewhere else next time, in good time before it ends. Re: Price for MOT - thought it was £29.65, garage invoicing for £50 - mtread - 20-07-17 Sounds like a rip off to me. What is the additional money actually for, it's the same amount of work? Take it elsewhere next time on principle. Re: Price for MOT - thought it was £29.65, garage invoicing for £50 - Buzz - 20-07-17 The MOT ran out on the 14th but there was no "rush" and it wasn't a Premium service etc., I called up last night to see if they could do it today, they said "no probs, just bring it down early and we'll get it done". I thought nothing of it until I got the text invoice...I'll pay but question where the extra £20 comes from. I usually take it somewhere else but that place couldn't do it as they'd bought the wrong insurance so they couldn't ride anyone's bikes to the MOT test centre they use...idiots! Lesson learned I guess. However they DID do a great while-you-wait job on the rear caliper though, split caliper (neither bolt would budge), removed 2 broken retaining pins, removed 2 stuck pistons, all for £20. It allowed me to clean, rebuild and bleed myself so saved £60 labour. Swings and roundabouts. Re: Price for MOT - thought it was £29.65, garage invoicing for £50 - lew600fazer - 20-07-17 Confused here you say they freedup a ceased caliper so is the extra £20 for that or did you actually pay £70 in all?? Like you say, a bit much for the MOT which you needed and they should've advised extra cost. Decent price for the caliper though. I'd just pay up and get the MOT elsewhere next time.........unless you fancy a row after a day's work. Re: Price for MOT - thought it was £29.65, garage invoicing for £50 - darrsi - 20-07-17 I'd go for the row, it wasn't even the same day, it was the next one. :lol Re: Price for MOT - thought it was £29.65, garage invoicing for £50 - fazerscotty - 20-07-17 I'm paying £20 for bike MOT's and £30 for the cars. Re: Price for MOT - thought it was £29.65, garage invoicing for £50 - Grahamm - 20-07-17 If they didn't tell you in advance that it would be more than the standard price, you shouldn't be obliged to pay it. Re: Price for MOT - thought it was £29.65, garage invoicing for £50 - robby boy - 20-07-17 Did the garage actually carry out the MOT or did they take it to a third party, if they are an MOT station they cannot charge more than the fee set by the DVSA, if they took it somewhere else they can charge extra to take it there and back etc. if they are a genuine MOT station and are overcharging I would bring it to the attention of the DVSA. I was reading it that the caliper was fixed during a previous visit. If it was done at the same time as the MOT then the price is more than fair. Just 'cos it says "£50 same day" doesn't mean he should be charged that at all. I'd certainly question it. Is that allowed for in the Government legislation on M.O.T's though? If not, how would they itemise the extra charge on the invoice. If they just list it as say...'M.O.T £50', surely that can't be legal?. When they gave me the printed invoice it had an extra £17+VAT for a "Pre-MOT check". I questioned it and they said it's a "check that guarantees the bike will pass when the MOT is done". I pointed out that I spent the previous evening checking the bike myself plus no-one told me when I brought the bike in that this would be done, they said "they do it unless told otherwise"....duh, obvs eh?!? Lucky they didn't replace both the wheels with giant Danish whirls while they were at it. My fault for not asking any questions and getting the price beforehand, lesson learned. Oh and the caliper work was done the week before, sorry for the confusion. Re: Price for MOT - thought it was £29.65, garage invoicing for £50 - Kenyun - 23-07-17 Did you ask the testing station to carry out a pre MOT check or to do an MOT test? If you did not ask for a pre MOT test, they should not have done it, unless it was free, which of course it wasn't! |
