What can be done about my forks - Grant1Shepherd - 30-05-17 Hi guys So the time has come where i need to address my forks, as you can see from the pictures attached they both have got this weird white rush on them. It is really starting to get me down as it is now the worst part of the bike and I really need to do something about it. Was wondering what my options are exactly? I am fully open to suggestions and would love to hear what you all recommend. Thanks guys Re: What can be done about my forks - jimjenko - 31-05-17 http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,22530.0.html Its corrosion, you can sand it off then paint or polish them Re: What can be done about my forks - samdf - 31-05-17 One of mine came like this.. i used a my air compressed 'dremel' with a polishing pad and took about 15 mins to buff out entirely. Autosol'd for a nice finish. Must say, not quite that far gone. Re: What can be done about my forks - celticdog - 31-05-17 Mines are heading in the same direction, I'm going to shotblast them and then add a hard matt black paint finish. Re: What can be done about my forks - bikemad - 31-05-17 Paint them faffing about polishing I used satin black on mine, the easiest way to remove old lacquer & corrosion is a mild abrasive wheel. Re: What can be done about my forks - Tubz1983 - 01-06-17 Or swap in a R1 set......? (I wish) Re: What can be done about my forks - joebloggs - 01-06-17 https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwi63dTYj5zUAhUKLsAKHTdlAJQQFgiVATAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.holtsauto.com%2Fsimoniz%2Fproducts%2Fone-coat-tough-paints%2F&usg=AFQjCNE-olfA6DPlK22lEAMTNM3W4BXHjg Try this, has some good reviews and I've just sprayed a few tired looking parts on the ZZR and goes on well. Cant vouch for how chip resistant it is. Re: What can be done about my forks - fazersharp - 01-06-17 As the link jimjenco showed you mine are like it too, but not that bad so I have let it be. Yam changed it to paint which is easier to look after but I think the brushed polish looks much better than the dull silver paint. Once you have got the clear lacquer off l am not sure how well the paint would stick to the surface and would easily chip I think, unless you did so much prep work to the surface - in which case stripping the clear lacquer and re shinning with a fine wet and dry and then a new coat of lacquer would look better and be quicker. They are not polished underneath but have a brush texture. But then of course you start all over again with a chip in the lacquer letting in water and the white fuz spreading under the lacquer that you can not get too. Ahhhh Is there such a thing as clear powder coating that will be stronger than spray lacquer. Re: What can be done about my forks - Chris - 01-06-17 Sand them back, primer then paint them. I did mine black and really pleased with them. Chris Re: What can be done about my forks - Grant1Shepherd - 02-06-17 (01-06-17, 03:38 PM)Chris link Wrote: Sand them back, primer then paint them. I did mine black and really pleased with them. What about the old lacquer though doesn't that make the paint not go on so well? Re: What can be done about my forks - Chris - 03-06-17 That's why you sand them back first ![]() Chris Re: What can be done about my forks - Grib - 05-06-17 Use etch primer on aluminium as well - helps the paint stay on better. Re: What can be done about my forks - motodevcam - 18-06-17 Autosol and lots and lots if elbow grease! Mine were like yours. Deckchair, beer, old rag and some patience ![]() Re: What can be done about my forks - Grant1Shepherd - 19-06-17 Thanks everyone for all the help and advice. There seems to be many different ways to sort this issue out. What I'm wondering now really is what is the best thing to do? The idea of painting them black is appealing because it's easier. But they would look nice as well if they were just cleaned up with Autosol and a lot of hard work - But how long would this take? is it even possible by hand? Look forward to seeing what you guys think? Re: What can be done about my forks - mobile mouse - 20-06-17 Hi, I will be having mine vapour, aqua or wet blasted. http://www.fjaquablasting.co.uk/index.html Just not sure how to protect the alu after.
