Poor tickover/ popping in exhaust . - vivfazer - 26-05-17
Hi all,
I've balance the carbs but at tickover there is a popping in the exhaust but above 2000 revs ok.
Any ideas.

You're not giving us much to go on here.
Was the popping there before you balanced the carbs?
What gauge did you use to do the carb balancing?
How much adjustment did you make to each adjuster screw? Typically they need less than a 1/4 turn, usually a lot less.
Do you feel any misfire/hesitation when you ride the bike?
Give us some more information and clues and we might be able to advise you more.

One of the symptoms of bad carb balancing, why did you balance the carbs?

The carbs were slightly out of balance ,
The popping only happened after I had balanced the carbs.
They didn't need much adjustment.
They had not been balanced for a good few years.
I have not replaced the rubber caps.
I have the four bamk of gauges from M&P.

Check all 3 vacuum caps and the AIS hose are properly fitted and not leaking.

Hi,
I have sprayed wd40 over the pipe AIS pipe and rubber caps to see if the revs increased hense a leak.
The revs stayed stable so they may be working ok.

Just off tickover up to 1700 revs it does misfire / splutter.

very similar to my problem.... i've done loads of research and most probable culprit is a blocked pilot jet and or perished
float needle o rings....i'm gonna run a tank of fuel mixed with redline carb cleaner...... if that don't fix it, it's a carb off job to clean pilot jets and replace o rings
mine runs like a dog from tickover to 3k rpm but above 3k its perfect

I've checked the AIS pipe and replaced the 3 rubber caps on the carbs but its still popping in the exhaust.
I think it will have to go to a bike mechanic.

What exhaust can do you have fitted? If it's a wide-bore aftermarket can, you might reasonably expect popping the exhaust as normal.

Itsca wide bore stubby end can.
It ran fine before I balanced the carbs,
When I put the vacuum gauges on the carbs again I'm pretty sure there was no popping in the exhaust.
If I connect the vacuum gauges one by one and run the bike it may show up where the leak is if any.
It may be worth a go,

Hi,
I've just taken tbe vacuum pipe off no.4 pot for hhe AIS and replaced it with a rubber cap and the popping has stopped.
I then put the vacuum pipe back on and the popping started again.
Do you have to remove the complete AIS system or can you disconnect the vacuum pipe and block the outlet on no.4 pop.

Hi Viv
You can simply disable the AIS by removing the vacuum pipe from #4 intake stub as you've done. Your popping was a combination of the AIS activating and the wide-bore can, which tends to make any popping of this kind sound more obvious.
Removing the AIS improves access to the top of the motor for plug changes etc but otherwise has no effect on performance. A good time to do the permanent removal is when you check the valve clearances because the AIS has to be removed to get the cam cover off.
