Re: Standard rear shock - mtread - 05-05-17

Standard rear shock is pretty crap, especially after 20k+ miles. You might want to think about upgrading.

Re: Standard rear shock - darrsi - 06-05-17

Have you thought about buying a bus instead?  :lol

Couple of posts down, Kebab19 is yer man, he tweeks a few shocks to keep people smiling  Smile

As Mtread says, the standard shock loses its oomph after a general 20,000 miles, all depending on personal riding conditions.
I bought a reconditioned one a few years back off an ex foccer, and it's still fine for me, and i'm a tad heavier than you, but i can only positively imagine that an upgrade is a lot better if you chuck the bike about a bit.
My bike is primarily a commuter vehicle, so although it's a lovely idea trying out a new shock, it's not really in the forefront of necessary mods for me, due to my way of riding and cost, plus i don't tend to take passengers any more, whereas i used to quite often.

First thing to do is check and set your sag.  Full preload should be too high for  16 stone

Re: Standard rear shock - daviee - 06-05-17

i put a fazer 1000 shock on mine and find it very good from what ive been told the r6 from kebab19 is alot better tbh i cant fault the 1000 shock

Re: Standard rear shock - Koreanbaz - 06-05-17

I found a ZX10R 07 rear shock in my garage today. Forgot all about it. It's only done 37 miles from new then got swapped. It looks like it should fit.  8)

Re: Standard rear shock - anutz - 06-05-17

I am a 17.5 stone fatty, and i put an R6 shock on with Kebab19's supply, and i also upgraded the front springs to Hyperpro progressives, no issues at all.

Re: Standard rear shock - matt7chunk - 06-05-17

how much would a kebab shock cost? the bikes done 32000 so past the 20000 threshold , prob time for an upgrade then,

reckon it will fit? have you got any pics?

Re: Standard rear shock - darrsi - 06-05-17

My OEM shock leaked the oil, i was going round bends like Zebedee, it was interesting to say the least just riding the spring.  :eek

Re: Standard rear shock - matt7chunk - 06-05-17

could i get the standard shock refurbished or a better spring put on it?

I actually bought a refurbished OEM shock off a fellow foccer, from memory he paid around £100 and sold it to me for a similar price as he upgraded his one.
Still going strong.

At risk of developing wasted texting finger syndrome Wink  may I enquire as to how many of those 32000 miles have you clocked up,

what problems , if any,  are you experiencing with the rear shock  and finally have you experimented with other preload settings?

Re: Standard rear shock - matt7chunk - 07-05-17

i have only done 8000 of them miles and tried a few different settings but just wondered what other people of my kind of weight have there's set to , just seem to find or too hard or too soft

Re: Standard rear shock - midden - 07-05-17

Well at 24st aprox and before I was tempted in to the R6 conversion I had mine set at 3rd from hardest which was okay  any harder and it became skippy round corners.  As said previously you should check your rider sag to see whether you need more or less preload.

As for going the R6 route  I am with everyone else, it is a massive improvent because once you set the preload you have the compression and rebound adjusters for fine tuning.

but even before going for the R6 shock I would check the sag setting on this one so you can make informed judgment on which spring you want on the r6
