Why in God's name would anyone think that a scruffy 400 superdream is worth two and a half grand? :eek

Haha, mental retro cafe racers lap up that stuff to 'modify'. I don't get it either?!

Re: W.T.F is going on? - joebloggs - 27-04-17

Don't mention cafe racer to the owner or he'll stick a set of clip-ons on it and ask for 5k

Re: W.T.F is going on? - Oldgit - 27-04-17

I really like CX500s, I've had 2 of them, the most expensive was £450, I'll sing their praises to anyone who'll listen but there is no way on the planet that I'd pay that for one.

Re: W.T.F is going on? - red98 - 03-05-17

Dispatch riders dream bike........that cheap pattern front mudguard is not going to help the sale  :eek ......take off the dealers profit and a bit of haggling and it might just be worth it......

Re: W.T.F is going on? - Millietant - 04-05-17

There are a whole load of old "Dogs" (BMW R45, Yam XS 250 & 400, Kwak Z400 twin to name just a few) on evilbay right now, all listed as "cafe racers" at STUPID prices. Almost all are unfinished, badly engineered tat that's about as far away from a cafe racer as you can get (some even have knobbly tyres ffs) but idiot Hipsters seem to want to pay for them in their droves.

I don't know if anyone else remembers this - and he didn't tout it as a cafe racer - but Henry Cole picked up (IMHO) a half assed, half finished, botch job of an old Z400, cleaned it up and then proclaimed it to be worth £1,600 (on something like She'd & Buried). I wasn't surprised when he didn't sell it (decided he liked it so much he was going to keep it) at that price. I'm no expert, and Henry is, but I wouldn't pay that much for a Z400 unless it was functionally perfect and looked like it had been really looked after (almost concours condition).

Maybe I'm just a boring old fart !

It seems in the biking world, that anything old, automatically gets classic status. Some of the Jap stuff from the 70's and early 80's was shockingly bad even when new but all that 0seems to have been forgotten about now. The old xs250s and 400s wouldn't pull the skin off the proverbial rice pudding and the equivalents from the other 3 were no better and they weren't even particularly reliable. A few years ago, when you could buy a decent 750 UJM for 800 quid they were worth having cos they were decent bikes for naff all money compared to the newer stuff but now that you can buy newer and far better bikes for less money (eg. 600 Fazer?) I don't see a lot to recommend them apart from nostalgia. Parts are increasing scarce and expensive, brakes and handling are way behind and they're more likely to strand you at the roadside. Some old Jap bikes deserve Classic status cos they moved motorcycling on and were hailed as brilliant in their day but they were all churned off the production lines by the 10s of thousands. So is a cbx1000 for example worth the £10,000+ price tag some people are asking?

There's the personal nostalgia factor with some of these old bikes. I had a pristine XS250 custom in the early eighties which was given to me by a sponsor to commute on (I was using my proddy bike to get to work before, lol). I fitted flat bars and slightly longer rear shocks and it was decent enough. I remember riding to work in the snow on it and it was very comfy, it cost sod all to run. Sadly, after 20,000 miles or so it dropped a valve and that was that.
If saw one today for the right price I would perhaps have a punt on restoring it.

Would you though?
I constantly hear of slightly older mates of mine affectionately talking about the FS1-E 125 (Fizzy) motorbike which was THE bike of past for youngsters at the time, but on recollection, and sheer fact, bikes these days will shite all over it.
I just about remember flared trousers and collars being the coolest thing ever but.......  :lol
