2 stroke question - Dudeofrude - 14-04-17 I know I know this is a fazer forum but you all seem to be knowledgeable foccers. My brother has just bought himself a 1981 Kawasaki kmx 125 crosser to play around in the local quarries. We are in the middle of stripping it down and doing it up cosmetically but given our combined ages come to less than 55 we have very little knowledge of the old 2 stroke engines haha. We know about mixing the oil and fuel but what about the gearbox oil? Can we just use my spare silkolene super 10w40? Or does it have to be specific gearbox oil? I figure it works in my gearbox so should work it that? Young people today ! Take piss out of you for being old and then want to pick your befuddled brain for knowledge, cheeky buggers ![]() Sorry Dude, not sure about the gearbox oil, I can't remember what I used to use, might be best asking on a two stroke forum to make sure you get the right info. Re: 2 stroke question - darrsi - 14-04-17 You sure you have the year right, they only started making them in the mid 80's Re: 2 stroke question - darrsi - 14-04-17 At the very bottom. Re: 2 stroke question - red98 - 14-04-17 Not much difference between 2 and 4 stroke gearboxes.....2 stroke oil for lubing the top end , engine oil for lubing btm end and gearbox..if that was me I would use the left over silkolene.... I would assume any I'll effects would be apparent after a few miles. May aswell try the free option first :-) Cheers guys Re: 2 stroke question - Gnasher - 14-05-17 Yes 10/40w will be fine, the oil type should be written right next to the dipstick/oil filler hole on the casing something like 10/40w and how much 1,4 L etc. Re: 2 stroke question - Red Ceri - 14-05-17 I always used specific gear box oil in my sons crossers. based on the fact that the oil is specific to gearboxes and not general 4T oil that has to be pumped around the whole of theengine and has been developed to do so, compromising both requirements of gearbox and engine use. just my opinion, and we know what opinions are like. ![]() Re: 2 stroke question - Dudeofrude - 14-05-17 We went with the proper gear box oil in the end ? wasn't expensive so thought we'd do it right |
