Towbar Mounted Motorbike Rack Advice Required - Frosties - 21-03-17

Hiya fellas,

As per title really. Got my eyes on a couple of nice modded VW T5/6 campervans and looking to drag a bike around with me on a towbar. Has anyone used/got one from Dave Cooper? They seem good value. Any others I've missed which are better. I know most take trailie bikes and can't locate one that would take the Fazer so advice as always appreciated  :thumbup

Tow bars have a maximum "nose weight" of around 80-100KG normally so that may limit you.

Re: Towbar Mounted Motorbike Rack Advice Required - Flooky - 22-03-17

I got one for a trials bike, no way would they take the weight of a fazer, they are good but only for light bikes.
I think you would have to use a trailer

Re: Towbar Mounted Motorbike Rack Advice Required - Frosties - 22-03-17

Looks like a trailie it is then - would love a Fazer carrier but no way way am I towing anything (used to towing caravans but want freedom on m/way and manoeuvrability).

Cheers anyway fellas.

NOW - which trailie  Big Grin  Looking like a KLX260 or Honda or CRF250. Bit over the recommended 100 Kg towbar limit of 100 odd Kg but sure you can strengthen it for 145Kg.

It's not as simple as strengthening the tow bar, they make your steering feel incredibly light which equates to less grip and possibly greater risk of under steer, aqua planing etc. Obviously the larger the vehicle the less effect they have.

Oh, and they are a bugger to get even lightish bikes on and off. Definitely try before you buy!

Sounds like it would just be easier to buy a van haha

Re: Towbar Mounted Motorbike Rack Advice Required - Frosties - 24-03-17

I have a dream and will succeed  :lol

Re: Towbar Mounted Motorbike Rack Advice Required - noggythenog - 26-03-17

You still dreaming frosties?

I had a dave cooper trailer, collapsible one which i towed the boxeye on with my little 3 cylinder skoda fabia.....anyway i know you dont want a trailer but i didnt use mine much, was galvanised, mainly sat in the shed or under the lean to.......rust was coming through when i flogged it.

Ive got my sprinter now (medium wheelbase) & i was dreaming about a bike in the back widthways behind the bulkhead but its surprising how long bikes actually are i couldnt even fit the chopped trx in that way.

Its nuts how heavy that light bikes suddenly seem when trying to get them on trailers and up ramps etc and then strapping them down is a pain in the tits also and then you are always in the mirrors worrying its about to fall off it totally spoils the fun.

I dunno....im with you with the dream but i think the reality is that its a pita and spoils any dreamt fun.

One way or another Noggy -it's happening. Be it a strengthening rear chassis/uprated springs etc or the bike is beside me in the cab - it's happening  Big Grin
