help! strange noise - shieldr - 06-03-17
Hi, riding home tonight on my 02 plate fzs600 and started to hear a strange pinking raspy kind of noise. When I open the throttle hard it sounds like a piece of tape is in the front wheel spokes/spars. Looked for something loose but there is nothing. When I got home and removed my lid I would say the engine is sounding way more clanky than normal. The oil is half way up the sight glass so ok from that point of view. Just might be an exhaust pinhole or manifold leak but also sounds like it maybe from the engine casing. I have had the bike over 3 years and it has not missed a beat. It has 26k on the clock and seems to be still pulling well. Any advice appreciated, thanks ?

Cam chain maybe? Adjuster might not have clicked over to next position yet.

If you aint sure try putting a screwdriver handle against your ear and blade to the casing at various points to see where it is coming from?
But if in doubt get it diagnosed quick it could be terminal if not caught early!!

Cam chain sounds like a sewing machine when the tensioner hasn't quite clicked.
Depending on how you ride the bike it can take months to click to the next notch.

Thanks guys. I have a pal at work who may be able to advise also. Hopefully it is the cam chain. Is there anything I can do to try and right it? Also will try the screwdriver tip. I will follow up on this with the answer. Cheers.

26k is okay, it's an annoying noise but not any major issue yet.
Should go away once the oil is warmed up in the engine as well.

Thanks. Will give it a blast tomorrow. One thing though....i would say the noise was at it worst at the end of my 30 min commute...

That's a bit worrying. In my experience a cam chain will be noisiest at start up and get quieter as the oil reaches operating temperature. If the engine is getting louder as the oil heats up it could be something more sinister. I'd advice not riding it until you get a mechanic to listen to it.

RPM set at right level when warm?
As the Dude has pointed out, the noise should really subside when the oil's warm.
Might be worth a second opinion, rather than finding out something nasty is wrong the hard way.

If the onset of the noise was sudden that does not suggest camchain to me. They tend to gradually get noisier and then go quiet again once there's enough slack in it for the adjuster to click to the next step.
It may be a blocked jet in one of the carbs causing one cylinder to run lean, hence you're getting a bit of pre-ignition when you open the throttle.

Cheers folks. Got a right good look at it in daylight today at work. Definitely seems to be a leaky exhaust manifold. Weird noise when throttling mind. It does blow when changing up gear too soon and opening throttle.

Got a 10mm socket then ring key on the exhaust bolts in order to nip them up...they rounded as if made of chocolate ?

If you look at the manual they're only s'posed to be torqued up very low anyway, from memory something like 10 or 12Nm.
Sounds like you could do with some new gaskets anyway as well.

Rounding is better than shearing a stud! Get some stainless done nuts ordered and until they arrive every time the bike is parked spray the nuts with your preferred release agent

What about one of those sockets with loads of pins in, they're surprisingly good?

Any photos of the rounded ones? A six point wall drive socket can sometimes still work if corners rounded. But hacksaw/dremel might be best to avoid sheared studs
