car tax question - HarryHornby - 20-02-17

Hi Guys, I know car tax isn't transferable between owners  any more but I have a question.

I'm buying my friend's car this evening, will be driving it back from Cambridge to Kent.  If he makes it sorn this evening before I pick it up, will an hour or so before I turn up be long enough for the SORN to kick in and for me to tax it?

Or, shall I just drive it home as it is and then tomorrow morning we sort out the Tax issue?  Thing is I'll be driving down various Motorways and M25 so don't want to get in trouble with any ANPR.

OR, do I need to actually send off the V5 and get it transferred into my name before I can tax it?

Why the FOC couldn't they have just left it transferable?  :\

Re: car tax question - BBROWN1664 - 20-02-17

You can tax it straight away on the new keepers bit from the V5.
He wont need to SORN it if you tax it straight away.
SORN is immediate even though it shouldn't be as your friend has paid a full months tax and wont get a refund on any unused days in the month.

Re: car tax question - midden - 20-02-17

As it's a friend just use it on your third party (presuming he still has it insured) as though you've borrowed it until the tax runs out.

otherwise just tax it online before you drive but you will pay from beginning of February

As BBROWN1664 has stated, no need to SORN it as when the V5 has been processed and owners changed on their system they will send a Cheque to the previous owner with whatever is left on the tax.

When I sold my last bike it felt really good receiving money from the DVLA rather than having to give them money them even if it was only about £10  :lol

Cheers guys, top advice as always.

tempted to drive it third party, it's an option.  Seems VERY unfair as per Midden's post that I will effectively lose 20 days of tax..... thieves!!!  :-(  especially as there are only 8 days of feb left

Re: car tax question - dazza - 20-02-17

If I knew how, I would start an online petition to change the system so that the robbing foccing government doesn't get to steal leftover days and have to reimburse all the money owed for road tax......Oh hang on a minute, can't really call it road tax. To do that it has to be spent on the roads..

What have you started Harry.?  :lol

I think someone pointed that out to the Government many years ago so they changed the name to Vehicle Excise Duty. That name doesn't imply anything so they can keep the money and spend it on having their moats cleaned or feeding their ducks.  :2guns

Re: car tax question - BBROWN1664 - 20-02-17

The thieving gits win both ways.

You sell a car or bike 20 days into the month, you don't get any refund of VED for that month so the government gets an extra 8 days (for Feb) of VED from you for nothing.
You buy a car or bike 20 days into the month, you don't get a reduction of VED for that month so the government gets an extra 20 days of VED from you for nothing.

in total, that means for this year, they will get 13 months of duty paid for the 12 months used.

You'd think consumer protection laws would come into play here and offer some sort of resolution

Re: car tax question - red98 - 20-02-17

You've got a friend harry  :eek        ......pay your pretend friend the money for the car and ask him if he wouldnt mine putting march 1st as selling date...drive the car home on your insurance and your pretend friends tax.....tax it at begining of march  Wink ....a proper friend wouldnt mind doing this........
