Silver Engine Paint - teecee90 - 19-02-17
Has anyone re-painted their engine and managed to get a good colour match?
I notice from previous posts that some have recommended Simoniz Engine Enamel but I have painted a test panel and it doesn't look right to my eyes - too much on the silver spectrum whereas the original is more grey in colour. Hamerite Silver smooth looks a better match, but I'm not sure it will withstand the engine temperature.
I've looked on RS Motorcycle paints and see that they do the correct colour (light yellowish grey), but again am not sure whether it will withstand the high temperatures on the engine block and cylinder head. There is nothing on their website that says it is a high temperature paint.
Any help greatly appreciated.
By the way - this 'project' started off as just an AIS removal job, but decided I had to do something about the state of the engine paint while I was at it....

I used rs a few years ago on my first gen 1 1000 it was a very good match & have used their engine paint many times since for other bikes & never had any issues.

Did you use the proper colour-matched (non heat resistant) paint on your Gen1 from RS paints or their generic silver high temperature paint?

Yes, i used the colour matched engine paint & because it is specified as engine paint it has to be heat resistant. Don't forget your etching primer.

According to RS Paints, the paint they supply is not a high temperature paint. They say that the engine would not have been painted with a high temperature paint at the factory, which is why it tends to peel. The only suggestion they had was to use etch primer, 2-3 very light coats (leaving each coat to fully dry) and 2-3 coats of lacquer. Trouble is, if Yamaha cant get the paint to stay on what chance do I have?
I will probably stick with the Simoniz Engine paint and just live with the colour difference.

Simoniz do 2 silver colours....silver and aluminium , aluminium is a closer match

The one I have doesn't say whether it is silver or aluminium. The code is SIMVHT31C

Your call bud but as mentioned i have used it on at least 7-8 bikes previously with no problems, the last being the z1000 that is shown in the picture test area on this forum. I had done 2-3000 miles on that bike after i painted the engine. Iv'e just ordered some more from RS as there is a bit of tidying up on the engine of my newly acquired 04 thou. :thumbup

Used the Simoniz. Not a great match, but much better that it was. That stuff is a bugger to cure/harden though. Still seems quite soft.

Looks beautiful though, Nothing quite like that brand spanking look.
Just wish I had the time/energy to keep mine looking like that.

The Simoniz engine enamel needs a heat cure cycle. I tried it on the generator and starter motor covers and it wouldn't cure without some time in the oven......not at the same time as the Sunday roast :lol

I've tried curing it with a halogen heater and heat gun, but it still seems quite soft. Probably won't harden properly until the motor is brought up to temperature.
Going to check the valve clearances while Im at it and tidy up a few other bits and pieces. Was tempted to change the hoses for new silicone ones but they are bloody expensive for a full set....
