Car Wanted - HarryHornby - 05-02-17

Hi Guys,

Is anyone near Kent selling a car?  Or do you know of anyone selling one?

My commuting car has finally given up the ghost.  Ideally looking for something less than a grand but could spend more for the right car.

Just needs to be reliable, I'm after a car for commuting, not a show car.

You can't have less than a grand and reliable in the same sentence!

Re: Car Wanted - fatbloke62 - 05-02-17

if the deal goes through on the new one I'm looking at  i'll have my rover 75 2l turbo diesel auto up for sale by the end of the month

Re: Car Wanted - tommyardin - 05-02-17

I know what you mean about not wanting to spend a load of dosh on something that is just to get you to work and back. But that transport is what enables you to earn the money to buy all the other nice bits for the bike, buy the food for your table and pay the mortgage etc.

I was self employed in the building trade for many years and just ran old dogs to get me to work, but the pieces of shite would fail to start, break down and generally be nothing but trouble, consuming so much time and expense working on them and causing so much frustration, fools economy in the end.

I was earning £180 a day as a self employed bricky, and lose 3 day a month with car failing to start, or it breaking down, would cost me £540 a month in lost earnings and all the frustration of fixing the piece of shite to hopefully get me to work the following day then having to explain yet again to the Governor why I was not in yesterday.

I bought a 2 year old Vauxhall Combo van for £5,499-00 paid the bank back at £190 a month including interest and it was done in three years, plus as it was a van for work purposes I could claim tax relief on the payments, with the bank interest added and the tax relief deducted thew van cost me £5,200 total.

I was losing £540 a month in lost wages, the van cost me £190 a month giving me a saving of £350 a month plus no shitty hands working on a heap, no having to explain to the Governor why I was not in yesterday and no absolute rage and anger that the F------g would not start.

You know what! I retired from paid work almost 2 years ago, I have had the van for almost 7 years now and it is still going strong, it has had tyres, a new silencer back box and one new rear spring in all that time, she's 2008 registered and is in as good a condition as the day I bought it.
Now has 138,000 miles on the clock, it's a 1700 Turbo diesel.

My experience is that its false economy driving around in an old dog risking loss of money or worse still loss of job.

Banks have been known to give finance free credit/loans to people who swap from another bank to theirs, might be a way of getting interest free finance on a reasonable car, save yourself some money and a awful lot of grief + you have the pleasure of driving about in a decent motor that is very unlikely to let you down.

No I don't work for Barclays. :rolleyes

Re: Car Wanted - ogri48 - 05-02-17

My missus car is up for sale, haven't advertised it yet. It's a 06 pug 206, 1400cc, been in the family since new, 64k ultra reliable, clean, mettalic silver, cd radio, just been serviced and ca belted, think it was motd about 3 months ago, plenty quick enough and frugal to run. Only reason it isn't advertised yet is I have to get a new blower resistor and pollen filter and haven't got around to it but I'll do it this week. They didn't change the filter on the service, it's dirty, restricts the flow of air and the heater element blows it's fuse. Pollen filter is a thirty second job but the £12 resistor thingy looks like it's gonna be a bit of an arse with my hands, I need a trained child or chimp..gonna be wanting 800 sovs once it's done and all tickety boo

Re: Car Wanted - ogri48 - 05-02-17

You can just make it out behind me bike by the side of me van lol...

Re: Car Wanted - HarryHornby - 05-02-17

Ogri, that's the sort of thing I'm after.

The car that has just given up the ghost, an 03 plate Honda Jazz  (has just had 3 months of everything going wrong, clutch, back box, failed MOT on faulty lambda sensor)  It's now, as of this weekend developed a bad misfire, engine light flashing (means stop don't drive the car) and I know it also needs 2 rear tyres.  It has a slight oil leak that I've been managing for 6 months too. BUT I paid £700 for it 3 years ago, bought it from a friend's sister and it's given me 3 years of good motoring, not bad for £700 :-)

As things stand, with 2 young girls taking all our funds, as well as everyday life there isn't really any spare to take out a loan significant enough to get a "decent" car.  And if a foccer says to me a car is good then I believe them (like buying off a mate).

Where abouts are you Ogri?

Re: Car Wanted - ogri48 - 05-02-17

Harry I'll take some better photos tomorrow, and we are going to put a full years mot on it this week, as having checked the mot runs out in May...It's a Peugeot 206 verve, got the receipts for work done in October which was cam belt, brake shoes, water pump, new auxiliary tensioner and pulley bearings. It's actually my elderly mother in laws hence the low use  and money spent whenever it needed it. It genuinely is a good motor and I don't really want her to sell it as I occasionally use when it's piddling down it if I'm just nipping into town so I havnt got to park my long wheelbase hi top transit. It's in the Forest of Dean just past Gloucester so a fair hike, but I'm in no particular hurry if you want to see if you can get summat local, I won't advertise it yet. Ma in law bought it off her equally elderly sister in law last year for a grand and has spent another 500 getting it spot on, whilst never using it ( she has a Meriva and only bought the car off her sister in law to help her out. ) so it's had a easy life to say the least. I used it for 80 miles Saturday to take the missus to look at a convertible she's after, just to give it a run as that's the most it's done in one hit in six months. It didn't miss a beat and the fuel gauge hardly moves, even though I was 70-80 on the m4.moby is 07841 656175 bud if you wanna talk about it though signal ain't great so home number is probably better 01594 832506 paul
