Stuck footpeg pivot pin - Grahamm - 22-01-17

A few days ago, the right footpeg on my FZ6 sheared off. I've got a replacement, but I'm unable to remove the old pin.  Sad

I've used a Dremel to cut off the head of the old securing split pin, but, despite the application of lots of WD 40 and 3-in-1 penetrating oil and tapping it with a rubber headed mallet, the old pivot pin just doesn't want to shift.

I don't have access to a blow-torch etc and I don't think a cigarette lighter is up to the job to heat it and help it move.

Anyone got any useful suggestions for how to shift it?

You could cut through the remains of the foot peg at the front of the mounting point, having done that cut down through the remains of the peg and through the mounting pin. Do this twice as close the the mounting bracket. Not the clearest description but I hope you get the idea.

You could unbolt the footpeg bracket from the bike then put it on a bench and really twat it with a hammer.

Not being funny but is it a stepped pin? as in try grinding the other end and using a drift see if it will release then from the other side?

Thanks for the suggestions.

To clarify: The footpeg is gone, I just have the pin going through the mounting bracket.

The pin is a T shape and there was a split pin at the base to hold it in place which I've removed. I could possibly grind off the top of the T and try to drive it out downwards, but I don't really want to do that unless I have no other option as I don't want to risk damaging the bracket or its mounts.

I'm going to try soaking it in either WD-40 or 3-in-1 for today and see if that helps free it. Any recommendations as to which one would be best?

Graham - The pin comes out upwards.

When I had my FZ1  because I was having problems with my knees I got a foot rest lowering kit. I had to grind the riveted lower side of the pins and they came out no bother.
If you do not have the use of a gas bottle have you got an electric paint stripper or hair dryer (not being funny) as the pin is steel and the mounting bracket alloy? I assume. Alloy will expand quicker than the steel and this may just be enough to do the trick, worth ago.

It should, but it won't, hence my post!

I'm going to give it a go with the 3-in-1 and see if that helps. If not, I could try the hair drier as I don't have a paint stripper.

An update: After lots of 3-in-1 and some percussive maintenance with a hammer, I managed to shift the old pin :thumbup

I got the new peg in place, but the pin for that, instead of fastening with a split-pin has a circlip, except it currently doesn't protrude enough from the bottom to get access to the groove it's supposed to fit in.

So tomorrow I'm probably going to do a little judicious work with the Dremel to deepen the dip the pin goes into which should sort it (fingers crossed!)

Oh, and I'm going to put copper slip on the new pin too, just in case I ever have to take it out in the future...
