So what is your favourite degreaser? Anyone use any homemade goo or know of household products that do a good job?

Degreaser for what exactly?
Some degreaser's have ingredients in that leave a residue, so are no good for cleaning brake pistons for example.
Brake cleaner leaves nothing though, is a very effective degreaser and is generally safe to use on anything, and i tend to buy whatever's a good deal online, normally 6 large cans at a time.

I want just a general degreaser, back wheel gets covered by chain crap. I also liberally cover hose clips with grease at the start of the winter. I often use Gunk or Jizer bur wondered what others use.

Paraffin is about the best degreaser for general use. Its about £4 for 4L and I find it better than gunk in most cases.

Though for most things I bother to degrease (bearings mostly), sometimes bicycle chain cleaning, I use "oil based paint thinner" (is the English term "mineral spirits"?). Cheap and works fine.
Though the mentioned Akra K2 Engine Cleaner works really well. Spray it, leave it, rinse with water. For really thick layers of sand/dust with grease, it takes a bit of scrubbing, but works better than most stuff I've tried so far, not damaging the paint.

WD40 Sprayed directly onto a cloth, Great for getting link lube off back rims, also good for getting tar spots off the side of you car.

That's what I use too. Cleans pretty much anything off anything. Does leave a residue behind though which I find useful for the bodywork as mud/water marks just wipe off with minimal effort, but not so good on the downpipes when you start it for the first time after cleaning. Tends to lead to a Stars in their eyes kind of moment.....

WD 40 contains 80% white spirit, you can buy 5 litres of white spirit for less than the price of a 400ml can of WD 40.
