Coolant overheating warning light - phil mcglassup - 20-12-16

Hi All,

I've read on one of the online owner's manuals that the coolant overheating warning light should come on for a few seconds when the ignition is switched on. Mine does not come on at all. The fuel and oil level warning lights do. The coolant level is fine and the bike runs okay.

Any ideas where I should start looking ? ...or should it only come on when the engine is overheating !! It's just that I've noticed the engine has a strange smell recently...without I've been running through cow excrement or something similar  :eek

There is no 'coolant overheating warning light'

Re: Coolant overheating warning light - bandit - 20-12-16

It's on the rev counter under 15000rpm marker.
I have a 1998 model owners book does not mention the light should come on with ignition briefly only when overheating & the 2001 book doesn't either, but 2003 book says it should come on with ignition briefly.
Just make sure the cooling fan is kicking in.

Well I'll be buggered! I never noticed that  :pc , I think I'm going to have to dig out my owners manual and my Haynes manual and see what else I've not noticed  :book :lol

Re: Coolant overheating warning light - Fazerider - 20-12-16

The coolant temperature warning light is controlled by a separate switch from the one that does the fan.
It's also separate from the ignition unit so there is no way for it to come on for a few seconds when you turn on the ignition.
The only time I've had an engine overheat was when the radiator developed a leak and the coolant level dropped. The switch is near the top of the thermostat block so if the level is low the switch doesn't get hot enough to activate anyway.
The only time it has come on for me has been in heavy rain. :lol

Re: Coolant overheating warning light - bandit - 20-12-16

Well that's sorted that then! I have never seen it come on & nor have you Fazer99, so I think we can safely say phil mcglassup that your overheating warning light doesn't either.

Re: Coolant overheating warning light - Jules-C - 20-12-16

It's an led lamp and not a filament bulb so is unlikely to fail.

The low fuel and low oil lights are filament bulbs and to check the bulbs haven't blown light up when the starter button is pressed but Yamaha decided there was no need to include the overheating led in this check

Well my coolant light (small red) comes on briefly when I turn the ignition on. I've got a 2002/3 Foxeye

We all did, believe me :-)

Re: Coolant overheating warning light - Kenbob - 21-12-16

You probably never noticed because the fuel warning light comes on too and it's brighter so will grab your attention.
Yeah I just checked too.

Re: Coolant overheating warning light - fazersharp - 21-12-16

I knew it was there but even when I was purposely trying to get the fan on when changing the coolant and doing a rad flush the fan or the light never came on, I got bored waiting and gave up after about 10-15 mins of ticking over.

Yellow Fuel, Red Oil, and Red Coolant Temp lights come on for about 1 -1.5 seconds after switching Ignition on.

I never got mine hot enough to turn on the fan except once on a stupidly hot day when I got totally stuck in traffic. Last time I changed the radiator I decided to ditch the fan as it gets in the way... the bike's done 30k since then.

Re: Coolant overheating warning light - mtread - 22-12-16

I've only had it come on once in 44k miles. Frightened the life out of me!
