First ride - ogri48 - 06-11-16

Ok so picked up my 04 gen one with 30k up yesterday, had a brief test ride before I put it in the van and it's lively enough, taxed and insured so first proper ride now through the Wye valley, about forty miles round trip. Did notice yesterday ex ups a little rattly and clutch bites a bit high and quick, hopefully nuffin problematic, gonna strip the exup out later in the week, but service record shows it was last stripped out, cleaned and greased  3,000 miles ago in 2014. Just to refresh my memory, should it check itself out when you turn the ignition on? Feels good to have a fazer thou again, even before I've ridden it... Smile

Re: First ride - ram - 06-11-16

yes it should move and back when you switch on

Re: First ride - ogri48 - 06-11-16

Cheers mate. Lordy I'd forgotten how good these bikes are...

Re: First ride - nick crisp - 06-11-16

I presume someone here said, "you'll be back" when you sold the last one  Big Grin

Welcome back to the fold  :thumbup

Personally, I can't imagine ever selling mine, especially with the work Luke has done to it to make it the best bike I have ever owned - meaning it suits my needs perfectly. The Striple might be up for sale soon on the other hand, as the Fazer is just so good, the poor little Triumph just doesn't get enough use to justify keeping it.

Re: First ride - ogri48 - 06-11-16

Yeah, you got me there..I went from gen one to gen two, then gen one mt01 to gen two mt01, and in truth the gen one is the best of the bunch. This 'uns bloody lively, I'm thinking it's  mebbe got a smaller gearbox sprocket or summat because I kept going for another gear I didn't have. Feels very light after running an mt for two years, especially next to me zzr1100 which is lovely but a complete whale.

Possibly Ivanised?

Re: First ride - ogri48 - 06-11-16

Possibly Nick, a lot quicker than my old un. Bloke has spent a lot on suspension front and rear, so maybe he had that done too. I won't know I guess without stripping the carbs and checking the jets. It rolls on in top like it was in third, that's why I thought gearing. It's a bit lairy on cold roads lol but the bt016s seem pretty good.

Re: First ride - Falcon 269 - 07-11-16

Good to see you back here again, mate. Smile  If you PM me with the name of the previous owner I might be able to tell you if it's one I've worked on.  Unfortunately I've never kept a record of reg numbers, so can't help out that way.

Cheers!

Mike

Re: First ride - ogri48 - 07-11-16

Brilliant, thanks mike :-) and good to hear from you. I messaged john (the feller I bought it off) and asked him but he hadn't had it done, but thought it had been done as it was quicker than his '99 r1!
I'll check the logbook when I get it back and message you the owners names. John confirmed it was on standard gearing..at about seventy/ eight the speedo/ rev counter needle run parallel ( rev counter needle may be slightly behind) does that sound right? It still feels like it could pull another two gears..even uphill it rolls on strong coming out of villages this morning at 25mph. It's got a titanium race can but there's no loud intake noise so I'm guessing even if it's got a filter the airbox hasn't been modded

Re: First ride - Falcon 269 - 08-11-16

Hi Paul

It's a simple job to check one of the needles to see if it's on standard jetting but an even quicker way to get a clue is to see if the rubber shroud over the airbox has been removed.  I always cut that off when doing a Full Monty.  Standing by for owner's name. Wink

Re: First ride - ogri48 - 08-11-16

Thanks again feller. You still doing the ivanising runs? I stopped the bike on the way to uni this morning just to count up thru the box and makes sure it had all six lol. It's gotta be geared down, or I'm just not used to a bike revving so high in top. The mt 01 was a lazy old revver (90 mph was 3k), and the zzr is geared high( and a completely different animal) perhaps it's that

Re: First ride - Timbo - 08-11-16

Re the EXUP - what exactly should it do on switch on?

Bw

Timbo

Re: First ride - Falcon 269 - 09-11-16

Yes, still heading over with the toolkit a couple of times a year.  Probably back next April, all other things being equal. Smile

EXUP should cycle to the start/parked position but it depends on how the motor was turned off, ie with kill switch or ignition.

Re: First ride - ogri48 - 09-11-16

took a bit more notice this morning, 85 is 5,400 rpm, would anybody know it thats standard gearing? my old one was nowhere near as strong as this one, did they alter the ecus or anything on the last year models? its gotta be jetted, im gonna find a local dyno feller and get a graph and comparison with others he will have on his system

Re: First ride - noggythenog - 09-11-16

Top result Ogri....looks like you got a good'ne mate 8)

& now Mr Crisp is selling one of thee best UK road bikes because his is so good.

I've gotta be honest....i'm just not enthralled by the looks of the Gen 1. Yet to still hear so much praise for these old beasts means that they must be the real deal.

I'm looking at one of those VTEC VFR's next year....they look comfy, sporty ish & i want to try out Honda quality....plus they look exotic & sound nice & ive yet to try a V4.

Unless they are the perfect bike & i end up keeping one for years then next on the list is a Gen1.

Sounds about right for standard gearing, Paul.  No significant changes to anything over the production life of the Gen 1.  They did slip a small catcon into the collector box on the 05 model but that won't have boosted power in any way.  Be interesting to see what the dyno says.  Imagine, if yours feels that good on standard jetting ... ? Wink

Re: First ride - ogri48 - 10-11-16

I'll suss one out ASAP fellers. Either this one is really good or the last one was really crap lol....

Re: First ride - ogri48 - 10-11-16

Noggy your not far from me you gotta try this one out before you decide on your next bike.. Smile

What suspension mods Paul? When Mike worked his magic on mine, I was blown away by the improvement. Then came the R6 rear shock, and suddenly I was able to use that power more effectively, and I thought, it doesn't get any better than this. But when Luke fitted the R1 forks, I was again amazed by the improvement. I was lucky enough that Luke had sourced a pair with K-Tech internals (we hadn't stripped them to check this, but it has since been confirmed by my local dealer). The result is a really complete bike such as I have never owned before. That's part of why I wasn't blown away by the Striple, the idea of which was to try something more modern to see how far things had come in the years in which I hadn't tried any new fare. Don't get me wrong, the Triumph is a very good bike. But even though I went for the R model, the Fazer out-handles it, despite the extra weight, and of course has much more stomp. Add to that the greater comfort for long trips, and it's hard to imagine anything better. Newer bikes have more power - well, the Fazer with the Ivan's mod seems to be exactly the right amount for me. Newer bikes are lighter - with the Triumph, that makes it too flighty for our bumpy roads. I've said it before (as have others) and I say it again: I don't think there is a better all-rounder, given the mods I (read Mike and Luke) have done to mine  Smile

Re: First ride - ogri48 - 10-11-16

According to the big bill, It's got k tech internals and mct rebuild front forks and kvetch spring and mct rebuild rear shock. There's a sheet with different settings for two up etc but I'm guessing the feller was the same weight as me because it's spot on. And your right. I've had a lot of bikes and ridden a lot of bikes via the magazine job but this is the most perfect motorcycle I've ever owned or ridden.and it cost two grand...I dunno if your anywhere near me mate ( Forest of Dean) but if you are you fancy meeting up for a brew when the weathers kind I'd appreciate your thoughts on how it goes/feels. In the meantime, I'm gonna get the dyno run in, that's a far more realistic figure and graph than my old addled head :-) Isn't it funny how decent suspendees affect your perception of the weight of your bike? I'd swear this was 50kg lighter than my other gen 1 but I know in reality it's just the same
