Lights on all the time - Graham53 - 01-10-16
hi guys ,
Just got the new bike yesterday and noticed that the headlights are on all the time and there's no on/off switch like the 600 , reading through the owners manual it seems that there is no on/off switch but the lights come on when the engine has started but mine come on as soon as ignition switched on and with engine off.
Obviously this don't sound right but electrickery is is voodoo to me .
The bike had full givi luggage , renthals and bar risers so I think it's been touring , could this have been done on purpose for that I wonder or is it a fault ?? Any thoughts appreciated

The lights come on on all modern bikes made for the European market. The sidelights come on when the ignition is turned on and the headlights will come on when the bike is started. The lights cannot be turned off. It's not a fault with your lights, it's made that way.

I think they made it compulsory in 2003 IIRC.
I have a USA import and the lights are on all the time with the ignition.
On mine there is no flasher/pass switch, just low and high beam.
Worry less ride more as they say

The main lights should come on after the bike has been spun over.
You can bypass the wiring quite easily and fit an earlier set of switchgear

That's a good idea cos with the alarm arming itself shortly after ignition off and when working on the bike it's a pain in the arse , it can go into transport mode but as I found out ( as well as my unimpressed neighbours :lol ) the alarm goes off when you take the seat off so you disarm it, but it arms again because the ignitions off and so I put it back into transport mode and the alarm goes off again when you put the seat back on ?.
I hate elecktrickery but I think I'll try that before I get an asbo from my neighbours.

Sounds like you have an American import, what is the under seat code?

What's the under seat code and where is it ( as I'm typing it I'm realising that it's a foccing stupid question and feel like a nob but I had to ask ?
However further to the original post I was starting up and lights came on then turned engine off using kill switch but lights stayed on which I now gather is correct but if I turn ignition off then back on the side lights only come on until starting then dipped beam comes on so I may have mistaken that for the lights staying on when the engine was not running.

That is normal for 2003 models on.
There is a white label under the seat usually near the seat lock mechanism with numbers and letters, this is the code which gives model and colour.
The American ones have lights on all the time.

Is there a switch under the seat you could tape closed or short circuit to stop this ?
No alarm so cant check on mine.

BREXIT should sort that out - I wonder if that means we don't have to have their fucking compulsory ABS now as well??

No it won't change a thing. The manufacturers will still produce them to euro standards regardless. They're not going to go to the effort of changing anything just for us

I know it's a long time but checked the code under the seat and it corresponds according to the Haynes Manual to
a uk spec 04 FZS 1000S , it's going in to dealers for a service in the morn so I'll get them to check it all out then
