1999 600 shock upgrade - Brettholmes89 - 06-07-16
I was told on the Facebook group that an r6 shock fits straight in on the 1000. Any shocks that just drop into the 600?

Whilst on the subject is there much I can do to stiffen the front forks up a bit? Heavier oil? Any after market springs?

15w oil makes a big difference in the forks.
I have older forks, without the adjusters on, and the heavier oil improved the handling markedly.

Mines a 1999, so no adjusters. I'll get some 15w oil for them.

I've recently put some penny washers into my front shocks, just remove top cap, drop in some penny washers making sure you do the same amount each side, think I've got 3 either side and then replace top cap, go for a wee run see how it feels, then add or remove to suit your ride, 30 minute job max.

They were half penny washers.... Same dimension as penny but made for the Scottish..... :b

I forked out £299 for a Wilbers rear shock with spring based on my all up weight in riding gear back in February since the OEM was approaching 15 years old & would have made a good "pogo stick" :eek . Any quality aftermarket rear shock has to be an improvement over a tired out OEM unit!
It has transformed the bike :lol
Coincidentally I had planned to have the front forks refurbed this winter but as I amin the middle of some other work on the bike I have taken them over to "Revs Suspension" in Halesowen (who supplied the Wilbers shock) for overhaul which will entail New Springs, seals & correct grade of oil to suit my weight,riding style (mainly sedate these days!) & the spring manufacturers recommendations.
Talking to the owner of the business he tells me that in general the standard of OEM suspension hasnt improved since our Fazers were built, at least at our end of the market-ie non Ohlins. However he gets a lot of customers who have spent considerable money on Triumphs,BMWs etc who are disappointed with the OEM equipment & go to him to get their bikes handling the way they should.
IMO Money spent on upgrading/improving tired/worn out suspension can only improve matters...BUT if you dont know what you are doing leave it to those that do :lol

For the front I recommend 20 weight oil as this makes the front rather stiff, then wind the rear shock up on its tightest setting, mines a 1999 and is just perfect for me, a little on the stiff side just the way I like it.?

Great. Going to do the oil over the weekend so I'll see how that goes and chuck some washers in if its not enough!
