FZS 1000 battery issue - msewelly - 26-05-16

Went out for a ride today, bike started and ran fine. I pulled over to have a quick stop but when I went to restart the bike, it just clicked on the starter button ie not enough power to turn the bike over. No terminals were loose on the battery and it ended up with me having to bump it down the road  :rolleyes

Once I got home, I got the multimeter out and got a reading of 11v on the battery which was the same when the bike was running  :\ . Would this indicate a dodgy battery as it does look dated (only acquired the bike recently). I will add that when the bike was sat for a while, I would trickle charge the battery to full charge but if it was left for a few days it would do the same (clicking) when I went to start the bike, so I'm thinking the battery has had it?

Thanks!

If you need a new battery check out these, not cheap but well worth the cost.

+1, I have one fitted and its one of the best batteries I have ever owned in 20yrs of biking.

Chargers normally take their information from the voltage of the battery so they can indicate the battery is fully charged even if one of the cells is dead and you don't have enough amps to turn the engine over, or not for long. If you want to find out for sure you can take the bike to an independent battery specialist who will be able to attach a proper diagnostics tool but it sounds like you may as well bite the bullet and get a new one. Following rave reviews I have had a Motobatt for a year now and have had zero problems with it, Yuasa and Varta are also good. This is a pretty good deal - http://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/187421

"got a reading of 11v on the battery which was the same when the bike was running" - if your only measuring 11v with the engine running it is unlikely the battery is being charged. You may or may not also need a new battery but check the charging circuit first. Fact that the engine started before your ride but not after a quick stop also points towards failure to charge rather than faulty battery.  With the engine running and above 2000 rpm you should see over 13v if battery is getting charged. You should see 14.1v to 14.9v @ 5000rpm according to manual.
