ignition key - Dustydes - 25-05-16
My ignition lock was a little bit awkward to operate, so a little bit of wd40 I thought would do the trick.
Now it's even harder and I have to wriggle the key to get it to turn.
Do I just get a new key cut?

wd-40 is no good!!! it would have stripped all the grease out of it and left it bare!!! hence the reason people use it to clean oil/crap off stuff!!! I'd get a tin of white lithium grease and try that before anything else! I use it every 3/4 months on my locks and it works well!

Check to see whether your key is bent or twisted, they can be (carefully) straightened in a vice, I've had to do this a few times. The stock ones supplied by Yamaha are quite pliable compared to those you can get cut at Timpsons or wherever. Also, if your key has a transponder fitted for the immobiliser, a Timpson's cut key will not start the bike unless the transponder is close by, such as on the same key ring.

It's a common problem - mine was bad initially, free's up with use. Use the search there's a lot of discussion on the forum.
I used very small amounts of releasing spray - frequently applied.

Thanks for all the reply's.
After a bit of searching I found that locks should be lubricated with a dry compound such as graphite powder.
I'm going to wash out lock with wd40 allow to dry and use graphite powder for locks.
Also found on ebay a company that will cut a new key from a scan or photo for £10
A key cut from the original will be cut with the wear from the donor key.
These guys work out the code from the key so you get a key that is brand new not a new worn copy.

I had the same problem and with advice from the guys on here cleaned it out with a good spray of electrical contact cleaner and left for 24 hours and then a decent spray of graphite grease ,and Roberts your dad's brother
