testing fuel light - Bretty - 22-03-16
Hi all,
I went out for a whirl on the bike last night. The tank was pretty empty, then I realised I've not seen the fuel light come on in ages, then I started getting paranoid about the dodgy connector under the tank.
Is there a way to test the fuel light without running the tank to empty?
The gauge I working fine, does the light work off the gauge or off a separate sensor in the tank? (if that makes sense)

easiest less faffing about way is simply drain the tank into a petrol can

There is no separate sensor in the tank, the light is driven by the fuel gauge circuitry... I haven't worked out exactly how though, mine also stopped working last year. :lol
Of course, your problem might be as simple as a blown lightbulb...

To drain the tank I guess I have to pull the pipe off the back of the fuel pump or filter. (?)
Then engine off, ignition on - just let it drain until the light comes on (or not).
Anyone know if the light is on a delay or latches? Else I guess it would flicker when the tank is on the limit.
Where does the tank drain from? Can I replicate the tank being empty by leaning the bike to either side once it's low?
I don't really like playing with petrol.

Undo the 8mm bolt at the headstock, loosen the Allen bolt at the rear of tank under the seat, use as a hinge and lift, turn petrol tap off, using pliers on the metal clip pull the fuel pipe off, put open end of fuel pipe into suitable container and open the fuel tap allowing fuel to drain out, turn on ignition and wait for the light to come on (or not if it's knackered)

Taking the tank off is certainly more sensible.

Lift the tank and disconnect the sensor cable. The fuel gauge should drop to zero and the fuel light come on.

flick the engine kill switch then push the starter button.oil light and fuel light should illuminate.telling you circuits ok.

And if it doesn't light the chances are it's just a blown bulb
