Neutral switch - NikolaFazer - 08-02-16

Hey guys, I'm new on this forum, so don't mind if there's a same topic (I can't find it).


So, I just got my Fazer 600 2001 and the neutral switch does not work. I located the switch on the left side close to gear changing lever. My question is do I have to drain the oil out of the engine when removing the neutral switch?
And is there a way to repair the faulty switch?

If the engine is filled correctly you should be able to remove the switch without draining the oil with the bike in it's centre stand.  Just be sure to make sure it's cold and be ready for the little spillage.

Worth checking the contacts and wiring first of course, as well as the bulb ! Before you start disassembling.

Contacts under the plastic cover on the left side are okay, but I didn't check the bulb because I thought it's a LED indicator. Do I have to take of the whole gauge off and disassemble it to check the bulb or there is an easier way?

Check that neutral swicth is not working first. With sidestand down put the gear in neutral. Can you start the bike? If yes the swicth is fine. If not measure the swicth.

Get multimeter and swicth it on measurung continuity (resistance). Disconnect the neutral swicth lead. Measure continuity between the neutral swicth terminal and ground - it must be zero. If it is zero the problem is not in the swicth, because that means it is swicthing fine.

Yes the switch is fine. There is no fuse for the neutral bulb light. It is connected via one diode to the neutral swicth directly.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to replace the light, you need to get the instrument cluster off. That what Haynes manual is saying.

Note it may be the bulb or the bulb socket that need replacing.

Yes, I figured it out... I'll buy the bulbs tomorrow for the instrument cluster background light, so I'll change them all.

Thank you for help guys, got that neutral light fixed (yes, it was a bulb), and LED background installed.
Looks good with my temp gauge that I installed few days ago Smile

Not necessarily Sad
The bulb could be in the wrong way round giving you the wrong reading as you did say you installed led bulbs (they can only go in one correct way)

No, you didn't understand, the LED bulbs are just for background lights. I figured it out, it was a bad contact on the switch, or the wire was touching ground. Works fine now...

Problem, again. The same one...
Neutral is always ON! Well, almost always...
Neutral light is OFF only when it's in gear AND the side stand is DOWN. When I pull the sidestand up, the Neutral light goes ON. I really don't get it... Does someone know what's causing the problem?

I should mention that sidestand kills the engine when I push it down and it's in gear...

I would disconnect the neutral switch and check its operation with a multimeter. Though from what you're saying it appears to be working correctly in that the engine stops when you put the side stand down and it's in gear. But it can't hurt to check.

Personally I think you're going to have to get a wiring diagram and work through the circuit bit by bit  I'm afraid.

Having just looked at the circuit diagram I reckon a good place to look would be at the diodes around the starting circuit cut off relay and the fuel pump relay. I am not sure as the circuit could be better drawn but there may be some weird effect if one of those has blown.

What are "diodes around starting circuit"?
Everything else is working just fine...
It works fine when I disconnect the sidestand.
Do you see anything suspicious? Cuz I don't...
