Help please; you may need a crystal ball though. - Harvey - 23-01-16 Hi all, hope someone has some ideas for me.Went out last Saturday on my 2009 GEN2 faired FZ1, great ride & when l got home put bike back in garage as normal. Got the bike out again yesterday and for the first time ever it was difficult to start. Anyway went about 5 miles to meet someone else for a ride but bike seemed to be running rough. When l stopped we both agreed it sounded like only running on 3 cylinders, felt the downpipes and sure enough 1 pipe was cold (compared to the other 3). Had a ride of about 30 miles or so to see if it would clear itself but no luck so went home. Today l have changed the plugs, thought it was a reasonable bet that would be the problem but no luck the same cylinder is still not having it. Now can you all look in your crystal ball and suggest what may be the problem? By the way bike is regularly serviced and used at least once a week all the year round, current mileage about 24k. Would be really grateful for any suggestions. Cheers Harvey Re: Help please; you may need a crystal ball though. - sadlonelygit - 23-01-16 coil Re: Help please; you may need a crystal ball though. - red98 - 23-01-16 Plug cap. Re: Help please; you may need a crystal ball though. - Grayo - 23-01-16 Yep. As above. I have had the same problem. The coil and plug cap is all in one on the Gen 2. Easy fix. Just search for a coil pack for a FZ1S Fazer. Re: Help please; you may need a crystal ball though. - The Male Whale - 24-01-16 To isolate the problem, swap the iffy coil for a one off a good cylinder and see if the misfire moves with the coil. If it does, new coil, if it doesn't blocked injector is the next thing to check. Whale Re: Help please; you may need a crystal ball though. - Harvey - 24-01-16 Thanks for your replies guys, guess what l am doing this morning instead of riding????????????? Re: Help please; you may need a crystal ball though. - red98 - 24-01-16 Good call by "the male whale"...swapping the coils is the way to go....dont know much about the set up on gen 2's, individual or shared pair coils but you should be able to swap....let us know how you get on..... Re: Help please; you may need a crystal ball though. - Harvey - 24-01-16 Took all coils (plug caps) off and tested them, three of them had correct resistance reading but the one on the offending cylinder was 50% down so need to buy a new one. Just looked on the net and they seem to vary in price from around £40 each to £80 each. Any recommendations/suggestions would be very useful. By the way while l was "playing" thought l would check air filter, really bunged up with chewed bits of all sorts including nut shells, a mouse must have had one hell of a Xmas party in there! :eek Re: Help please; you may need a crystal ball though. - Cellarman - 24-01-16 There's one here might be worth a punt for £25 Re: Help please; you may need a crystal ball though. - Harvey - 24-01-16 Thanks Cellarman but don't think l will risk a secondhand one as mine looks good visually but without testing them you just don't know. I'll bite the bullet and buy a new one afterall l'm saving a lot of labour charges by changing it myself. Re: Help please; you may need a crystal ball though. - unfazed - 26-01-16 What I did with the 600 ones was buy a set of NGK caps and remover the resistors from them and replace the Yamaha resistors with the NGK one. The yamaha resistors are carbon and tend to either drop way down or increase in resistance, the NGK ones are wire wound and better Have not tried it with the 1000, but since one of yours is knackered unscrew the inners of the plug cap, do this on a table on kitchen toweling as there are a few tiny parts in there. Check the length of the resistor if it is just over 1/2 an inch them swap for the NGK ones which are about 3/4 of an inch long. You will have to change all four as they are a lower resistance than the Yamaha ones. Worked a treat for me on the 600. Re: Help please; you may need a crystal ball though. - sadlonelygit - 26-01-16 Pat, a gen 2 cap Re: Help please; you may need a crystal ball though. - brooker81 - 26-01-16 had the same thing on my gen 2 last year was a coil and plug number 4 far lest as sat on the bike this occurs as this plug gets the most weather. I am now firing on all cylinders again ![]() A useful tip for others with the gen 2, as it is such a pain to get at the plugs if you have any reason to access them such as during a service then well worthwhile checking the coil resistance in each plug cap. Don't forget each one has a primary coil and a secondary coil. If any of them are down them change them. Don't make the mistake l did by changing the plugs then putting bike back together without testing the coils, then have to take it all off again to change a coil. |
