Idle Hands - NorthWestern - 06-12-15

Well, missus out and I found some foam board while clearing the garage out after replacing my front discs...

Started to make a pattern for some winglets/side panels that I am tentatively planning on making from carbon fiber at some point...

Just trying to get a basic shape really but here is the fruits of an hours labour while ducking in the house to check on the little 'un.

I am liking the shape so far, I wasn't after totally flat wings, not sure if I will extend it down the radiator as one piece or have it two piece. I was going to use expanded polystyrene but its just too messy to sand down, it gets everywhere and er'indoors wouldn't be too happy so foam board and a razor/hot glue gun is all I can really use at the mo. Final shaping will be with body filler and sanding .... outside (apparently).

Will they not cause any air noise, they're not exactly aerodynamic?

Probably use the fairing bolt point at the rear and maybe use the indicator hole or something.

Aerodynamic- are you going to put a skin/surface over the ribs, i.e. are they purely structural or are they finished concept.

Ah is see now. This is simply to create a plug I will make a fiberglass mold from. I will be filling in the sections around the ribs and this will be a smooth shape.

I'm more than likely totally off point, but they look like they're gonna get a wind rush over them.

There was a rumour the in laws were taking the little un for a few hours today but that plan changed. I only had time to make some filler blocks for the ribs and give it a rough sand to get the basic shape for a quick look see...

I had wanted to extend the standard fairing a bit further than this is doing (along the top of the frame/tank) but it hit my knees. This currently will clear knees with the armour I wear quite comfortably...

Probably be the end of the week until I can do any more Sad

I wasn't entirely happy with the original shape and also thought it was a little small.

After faffing about with the white polystyrene I got some proper blue foam which is miles better to shape and much easier to clean up. the white stuff got everywhere when sanding etc and static sticks it to you, carpet, shoes, living room carpet... 'er indoors wasn't best pleased!

So yeah, blue stuff, shapes really nice and doesn't make much of a mess. A glowing endorsement - It won't take body filler though so I will need to coat it with something before that stage, probably some poster paint or PVA.

I have the leading edge of the "wing" following the same line as the engine head just to tie it in and have some continuity with the existing bike lines etc.

There won't be any gaps, this is just the basic shape, I will add body filler and blend it smoothly into the original fairing then add a section that will run behind it then extend up to mount points. This will then be used to make a mould... Thats the plan anyway, I have some carbon fiber big enough to do these but will do the first ones in fiber glass to test them out.

I guess the point is that I had a paint scheme that would only work with a slightly deeper front fairing but I don't particularly like any commercially available side pods. Plus I have grown to like the little winglets so decided to make some

Like it, how you going to mount them, me thinks you'll need some substantial mounting points to cope with the wind pressure forcing down on them
