clutch slip part 2: still have it: FIXED - Paulfzs - 18-06-15 so i changed my oil to motul bike oil 10/40 ... flushed it through with 1l of motul 10/40 then put fresh oil in but still having clutch slip issues... still as bad as it was before, ive just been for a 20 mile ride and its no better. As a side note, i could be paranoid but my clutch feels pretty light, i can pull it with a slight bit of a struggle with my little finger only. Now what? Do i have to give it more time to soak in? is it likely ive worn the friction plates too much using it whilst it was slipping for about 700 miles? could the springs have anything to do with it? id love to avoid changing the plates but if i HAVE to. Bike info: 2003 engine, 25,000 miles, previously used car oil and clutch slip problem appeared. Re: clutch slip part 2: still have it - darrsi - 18-06-15 Have you PROPERLY adjusted the clutch cable at both ends? Oil doesn't "soak in", it ain't that. Doubt it's the springs either. If memory serves me correctly, you are well known to rag it, and also wheelie it as well, this does not help matters at all, it was designed as a road bike, not a stunt bike. Adjust the clutch, as per manual, and if that doesn't help then "possibly" a combination of previously incorrect oil and knackered/abused plates are simply not helping matters, so new plates may be the way forward. According to previous posts on here, heavier springs are not advised. Re: clutch slip part 2: still have it - maxzer1500 - 18-06-15 Think you are going to have to bite the bullet and replace the plates, preferably genuine yamaha but ebc prob ok. It's most likely a combination of things that cause the slip, low friction car oils won't help, bikes using them without problems will be the ones that have low tyre wear. Most bike clutches can handle the engine being used hard as long as they fully re-engage after a gearchange, if racers didn't upshift without the clutch or use quickshifters they would have problems. Using the clutch to encourage a wheelie might be ok but not on a regular basis. Re: clutch slip part 2: still have it - Fazerider - 18-06-15 Even with standard springs the clutch action on the Fazer isn't particularly light, If you've heeded darrsi's advice about correctly adjusting the cable at both top and bottom, the light feel you describe may be very tired/broken springs or a broken clutch pressure plate. Re: clutch slip part 2: still have it - Jamieg285 - 18-06-15 I've recently had problems with a bit of clutch slip on my new bike. I'd over adjusted the clutch at the base end, and although it appeared OK when adjusting and initial riding, when applying a bit more torque (open throttle!!) it would start slipping. Solution for me - back the adjuster screw out an 1/8 of a turn. Re: clutch slip part 2: still have it - Paulfzs - 18-06-15 spent quite a while adjusting and checking the clutch on both adjusters but still having clutch slip. will try backing it off a little more see how it gets on. I did rag it but less so now but it was ragged for the first 1500 miles and ive not wheelied in a while, i did clutchless wheelies just pulled up under its own power. ordered a new clutch gasket should be here monday so i can get it apart and look. i remember my clutch being much harder than it is. ill get it apart and get it measured and look for any blue on the friction plates. Re: clutch slip part 2: still have it - Jules-C - 18-06-15 Could be some of the bolts have unscrewed themselves so taking cover off for a look as soon as possible is only way to check Re: clutch slip part 2: still have it - Paulfzs - 18-06-15 noting all this lot down. i can't do much to it during the week as i share space with a business so tools and bike leaning over ill be in the way, sunday i shall get the cover off and clutch apart ready for monday morning to put it back together if all is good. Re: clutch slip part 2: still have it - crickleymal - 19-06-15 Is there an adjuster at the bottom of the cable? I didn't notice one on mine when I looked at the front sprocket (could just be inobservant though). Re: clutch slip part 2: still have it - Jamieg285 - 19-06-15 There is. It's behind the rubber bung in the cover. You need a deep offset 12mm ring spanner to release the lock nut and a philips screwdriver to make the adjustment. It's very easy to go too far and get clutch slip, so only adjust a little at a time and give it good test ride after each change. Re: clutch slip part 2: still have it: FIXED - Paulfzs - 19-06-15 So today i spent ages pondering and fiddling... the bottom adjuster was in just a bit too far! clutch slip has gone. Use a small 4 inch long flat blade screwdiver for 3 & 4 carb screw, it's much easier as i found out by chance. :thumbup Re: clutch slip part 2: still have it: FIXED - Paulfzs - 20-06-15 i shall give it a go. |
