Center Stand clean up... - anutz - 12-05-15

So i decided to continue taking my bike to bits and cleaning/breaking/fixing bits....center stand is current object of affections....

I made sure i was wearing some goggles in case the spring shot off....

it was a little tricky to get the bolts off but a quick heat with a torch sorted that - then i had to remove the nuts and then knock one of the bolts out - the one OPPOSITE the side where the spring attaches..

once that bolt was out i wiggled it around a bit till the tension was off the spring and then it fell to bits and i could knock the other bolt out

Here it is before hand:

And...after some attention with wire brush and wire drill bits as well as some degrease....

Almost painted it with my exhaust paint i was using at the weekend but then realised how do i take the center stand for a spin  :lol

Any recommendations on what to paint this with?

next thing once its painted is also to take care of the rust on the projections it fits to as they are a little rusty and also clean the rest you can see  :lol

Some people a while back commented the center stand can rust badly so this is all in the name of stopping that happening, all seems superficial at the moment

I use for things like that :

And then a top coat of 2K acrylic paint.

I belive the way to go once your stand is at that stage is to use smooth haherite that paints straight on, my stand is next on my list and at the moment that is what I plan on doing
What de greaser did you use

Hammerite is a bit thicker and has anti rust properties so I'd tend to slap a load of that on it.

degreaser - some left over WD40 Degrease i used on the chain - and then some left over Brake Part cleaner - both very volatile and seemed to cut through the muck...

Then set to work with the wire brushes!

might have some hammerite in the garage....

I got mine powder coated as well as crash bars as long as its kept clean it'll last years looks better too

good idea but i think i will use up the rest of the tin of hammerite i have - no cost and does the job for now  :lol

Agree with others, hammerite smooth- fyi I've used this on the flaky engine fins and it lasts a couple of years all weather riding! But you've already got heat resistant paint anyway!

Yeah, your exhaust paint and stick it in the oven to cure when the wife ain't looking or you'll get some  :uhuh

2 coats of Hammer....Direct To Rust, Smooth Black....seems ok to me!

Forget your stand ------------ you need to get some skirting boards on there

at the moment i need to pay for all the bike bits, its been a year anyway so whats another few months without carpets and skirters  :lol

Hoping to get this bike back on the road soon...

Still to do...

1. Fit Braided Lines

2. Fit Calipers, this is the issue, the pistons and seals form the USA will not be here till June 11th, and then i probably won't get the serviced calipers back from Powerhouse for a week ( sending the lot to be fitted as well as the rear FZ1 from the USA to be serviced as well....good price! )

3. Fit KOSO Digital Speedo i have purchased - scratching my head on this right now so threads to come!

4. Fit New Lights/Indicators, have a nice all in one unit with fork mounts so not too bad...

5. Mirrors, fit em

So all in all i suspect i will be back on the road June sometime - so plenty of nice riding weather left...

As long as it passes its MOT which will be due June 12th

All good stuff! Have you kept a tally of what youve spent so far? It must be a fair bit so we are looking forward to seeing the end result!

i think including the new end can i bought and lots of tools its nearing 900-1000£ so a bit of a whack!  :eek

But i ain't got nothing else to keep me out of trouble and i think it will turn out nice  Smile

Mine was a mess also, took it to Romax in Stockton who powder coated it for £14, it looks better than new.
