I read this and thought a few on here may find it interesting.

I knew about this story as George Brough's factory used to located not far from where I live (now demolished & replaced with housing). The picture of the 1959 helmet test made me chuckle though! Tempted to use it as an avatar...

If ever you are in Dorset (at this time of year) do go and visit TE Lawrence's house, very basic for such a decorated individual

It's on Rhododendron mile and you can see why he loved charging about on his Brough

Great bit of interesting reading there.  :thumbup

It's not law for trike or quad riders to wear a lid though is it?

And i simply don't understand how Sikhs get away with wearing only a turban as well, the law should be the same for everyone.

I'm not 100% sure but i think that one of the several film cameras sitting in my reception area at work was used in the filming of Lawrence Of Arabia!

I have never seen a crash helmet that would fit over a turban :pokefun

I believe that Sikh's are exempt from wearing helmets due to religion but also are limited to 50cc mopeds!
I may be wrong as I was told this by Mr Policeman bout 30 years ago when he told me off for not wearing one!! ( I tried to use the excuse that it was pushed up my arm so technically I was wearing it not carrying it, but he gave me a stern look so I put it on my head!)

Re: T E Lawrence and crash helmits. - bigralphie - 12-05-15

I thought it depends on what the basis for a trike is ie car or bike to dictate a lid or not.......but there are so many rule changes now I may be way off  :rolleyes

It clearly states "two wheeled motor cycle", so although not recommended for obvious reasons, you don't legally need to wear a lid.

Re: T E Lawrence and crash helmits. - BBROWN1664 - 12-05-15

Sikh are not restricted to 50cc, they are just exempted from the helmet law on the basis that you cannot get helmets to fit them and they cannot (or will not) remove their turban in public.

Trikes and quads are not considered as motorbikes or moped so are treated like cars with regard the helmet laws daft as it may seem.

Can't see any restriction on engine size anywhere regarding the wearing of a turban on a motorbike in the UK.
This story wipes out the 50cc possibility anyway.
