Engine oil level - sc0ttie - 28-03-15
I took my bike out for a quick ride today and decided to have a look at the engine oil level 20 minutes after i got back home. This first pic is the oil level window and the second is inside the oil filler cap. looks a bit dry?

I noticed the oil level on my windows full after i did an oil change, and so i drained some oil out.....seemed to sort the issue, but now its saying its over filled again - running fine, so i am interested to see what people say on your photo...

Weird from the window i would say its overfilled but theres nothing on the engine internals.
Do an oil change to be sure.

i best go check mine! What could cause the clutch to be so dry but the oil level to be over-flowing - something blocked?

bike was on centre stand when photos were taken. I will get some 10/40 oil tomorrow. My oil light has not come on but i noticed the gear changing felt a little notchy the past couple of days. There has been no oil patches in my parking space at home or work but I only had the bike a month and this is the first time i had a proper look at the oil level.

You need to turn the engine on for 30 seconds then let it settle in the window, that's your correct level, on the centre stand on level ground.

The sight glass shows it's already overfilled. You need to drain what's in it and fill it with the correct amount of oil that's shown in the manual

Gravity.
From first impressions, the colour of that oil looks old and almost muddy, so i'm guessing that it's lost protective qualities and become thinner and non sticky, which is why you're not seeing any oil on the plates as it's quickly draining to the bottom.
As i said above, you should start the bike for 30 seconds which will coat the whole engine with oil, then you check the level when it settles in the window, i normally try for two thirds up between the lower/upper oil level markers.
Oil in this poor condition will not coat the engine so gravity will just make it immediately fall downwards, giving you a false overfull reading, plus doing sod all to lubricate your engine parts.
It needs replacing rather sharpishly, and no doubt your filter too.
I'll hazard a guess when you empty your sump it'll flow out like water rather than oil.
When you put new oil in you can start with exactly 2.5 litres without fear of overfilling, then start engine for 30 seconds, let it settle, then top up gradually, a little at a time, then start engine again, etc, repeating the process until you're happy with the level in the window.
With a new filter you'll be looking at roughly 2.7 litres, but take your time, and don't overfill. :thumbup

Defiantly go for an oil and filter change it dosent cost a lot and you know its been done there is no telling what the last owner has done
