Speedo drive query - Tommyk - 25-03-15
Hello foccers could anyone be kind enough to explain the relationship between the speedo drive, the clocks and the tps
I'm doing a usd conversion and would like to know the effect of removing/changing the speedo drive to suit the new front wheel
I know it causes problems but I don't know what or why any advice would be great

Bike runs well without speedo sensor. The only drawback is obvious, speedo shows 0 all the time.
The original sensor on the front wheel's left side works with 5 Volts, gives 4 pulses per rotation. The new setup should do the same (assuming same wheel circumference) if you want proper speedo readings.

If you have/ or get hold of the plastic version of the sensor then you may be able to file and shape it to fit the new wheel like I did- no removal of sensor = no problems!

Darrsi: That's the right thread.
Risticuss: I haven't intentionally hidden how to do any of this stuff - it's just that no-one seemed to be interested in fitting alternative front-ends on their bike, so I never elaborated any further on my R6 fork thread.
To replace the standard speedo sensor unit, use one from either an FZ-1 or FZS1000. Actually there are other Yamahas the same but to date they're the only ones I'm aware of that work. You do however need to extend the wires so they're the same length as the ones on the standard unit (if you want to place it on the front wheel).
Tommy: Not sure if I can explain this well but will have a go...I'm sure someone else can finish it off for me (possibly Muddybuddy).
Inside the standard speedo unit (at the front wheel spindle area) is that sh1tty wee two-pronged hollow metal unit that breaks on a regular basis every other time you change the front tyre :lol
The two prongs where they fit into the front wheel slot are the BIG clue to all this. Those two prongs moving along with the wheel send signals to the clocks etc where speedo information can be estimated.
The replacement speedo sensors named above do something similar, but usually operate via the front sprocket on their parent bikes.
Both Muddybuddy and myself raised the height of two brake disc bolts a couple of millimetres by inserting small steel washers underneath them. As it's a six-bolt disc bolt pattern for the likes of an R1 / Fazer 1000 front wheel, it worked out very handy, because using two of the bolts facing 180 degrees away from each other effectively emulated the effect of the two sensor prongs.
So, if you place the replacement speed sensor the correct height over the disc bolt area (lots of fiddling), only two of the six metal disc bolts will 'activate' the speed sensor. This will then send an accurate reading to the original speedo clocks / TPS blah blah blah. And of course allow you to fit any front-end you like to the Fazer

You should see the revised speedo sensor bolted in place via the lower caliper mounting hole and 'hanging' over the brake disc bolts. You should also see the two raised disc bolts at about 11 0'clock and 5 o'clock if the brake disc were a clock face. It's these two bolts rotating past the FZ1 speed sensor that activates the signal sent to the clocks etc and emulates the original speed sensor effect.

I've had me stem swap done and spacers made I have r1 front wheel and discs , fender
So speed sensor was unsure about but that's cleared it up for me
Got a week off work so wanna try and get it all done starting with a service tomorrow just to make sure she running perfect
My fazer is naked with after market headlight that I've never really liked so wanna do something about that aswell and thinking maybe clipons aswell so gonna be busy
Doing my first ever bike mod
Slightly nervous that I'm gonna mess my bike up but excited aswell as always wanted to do something like this will probably have an r6 rear shock off you if all goes well

Yes, the electrical end-plug is the same as the standard FZS600, which is handy :lol

I think you might want to get in touch with Muddybuddy - he swapped his front-end to a R1 4XV setup, so may be able to advise you in-depth on your own conversion. Also, he ran his speed sensor to the rear wheel, placing the sensor on top of the end of the swingarm, whereas I went with placing it at the front wheel. As long as you are able to space the raised disc bolts correctly and set the sensor the right height to them, it doesn't matter which wheel you opt for.

Got the tank and carbs drained yesterday
No wonder it was running so rough might have a tank issue new filters and plugs fitted
Running good now so gonna crack on with forks tomorrow cheers again
