Genuine Clutch Cable - Worth it? - silver-sloth - 24-03-15
As per a separate post, I've been having a bit of hassle with my clutch.
One bit of advice was to use a genuine Yam clutch cable (I've always used pattern ones in the past) but having just looked on Suttons site, a genuine one is over sixty quid!
Simple question - Is it worth paying 3 or 4 times the cost of a pattern part for a genuine cable?

I bought a genuine Yamaha one from my local bike shop and I'm sure it was only £25 -ish, admittedly it was old stock they had on the shelf but got to be worth shopping around for cheaper OEM somewhere else I would have thought.

a genuine clutch is cheaper than an aftermarket one. why? if an aftermarket cable is purchased and fitted after two rides a genuine one is ordered...
difference is like night and day.

Thanks for that bludclot. I've been riding for 9 years with pattern ones (the original snapped after a couple of years of hard riding) so forgotten what the orig one is like! :\
Hopefully, Devilsyam can sort me out with one from his mancave, so I'll be reporting back on the diff soon!

Definitely buy a genuine one. Suttons is a great site for checking for parts but I usually order from Fowlers who I generally find to be much cheaper for genuine parts.

It depends on your luck.
There is a metal angle in the cable that is crimped to stop the sleeve being pulled into it when the cable is tensioned. If this holds, the cable lasts. if it fails, you have no clutch. I have never had the crimp fail with an OEM part, but I have had it fail twice with after market parts. One failed after two hundred yards, its replacement lasted almost a month. I ended up buying a second hand cable on e-bay which is still going strong.

A quick update on this one .......
Thanks to DevilsYam's offer of a 2nd hand genuine cable, I put one on the bike this aft. Clutch action is definitely much smoother and lighter so thanks to all who posted with advice.

just to add my experience.............had a very heavy clutch action with a genuine cable fitted and oiled. Bought a Wemoto cable which i fitted but didnt even go for a ride as it felt and sounded like a file drawn over a corner of steel, waste of money. Just bought the genuine article for £47 and it now feels like a hydraulic clutch its so light. The only difference between the old and new genuine cables was that the old ones liner was sliding with the inner cable as if they were locked together. Well pleased i bought the real thing not just the fact its lighter but that it seems better for clutching away from a standstill.
