clutch problem... - Paulfzs - 10-03-15

ok so i had a problem with my clutch last week where it suddenly went slack...


replace clutch cable and it was fine untill today when i went out it suddenly went slack again.


adjusted on the handlebars to its near max adjustment, when i looked at where the cable goes into the sprocket cover it appears there is a fair bit of play in the cable it moves up and down freely even near max adjustment.




cable is correct one.

Do you have a haynes book of lies?    Have you adjusted the mechanisum behind the rubber bung on the sprocket cover?

not sure how?


saw mention of undoing the nut then turning the screw but i havent tried it, might have to now.


spanner or socket?

You'll need a bent spanner and a screw driver, got to loosen it with the spanner then adjust with the screw driver whilst holding the spanner in place. Then tighten with the spanner whilst holding the screw driver in place. Screw the adjuster on the clutch lever in nearly all the way before tightening at the sprocket cover end then fine tune with the adjuster on the lever

You need quite a deep angled ring spanner.

You can get away with a socket, tighten the inner screw up then back off a quarter of a turn then tighten the outer nut, but judging it right is a bit of an art.
Much more precise with the right tools.

Rubber cap off of sprocket cover will reveal the nut.

i dont have the rubber cap on i never had one on either engine.

Hopefully it does only need adjusting, but if the cable went slack suddenly it may be the gizmo inside that converts a pull on the cable to a push on the clutch rod is collapsing.
The bearings can get rusty which is more likely if the rubber cap isn't there to keep rain and road salt at bay.
To investigate, you'll need to take the cover off and undo the two screws holding the mechanism on. This isn't easy as they're tight and the heads are about as hard as ripe brie.

coming up to a roundabout i had no clutch at all so i was stuck in 1st gear, managed to negotiate it in 1st and pull over, found the problem, the adjuster in the case was loose!


had to buy a screw driver from a petrol station to tighten it up but it came loose again a few times as i couldnt do the nut up due to lack of tools.

i thought to myself nevermind its an easy fix.. then remembered i threw the old cable in the bin when it didn't even need changing...


in my defence i had no idea the bit in the case was an adjuster.

If you fix your own stuff inevitably something is going to go wrong at some point you just have to learn from it.
