racks/backrest etc - johnakay - 22-02-15 how many of you would be interested if I decided to go ahead and make these. I should be able to keep with in the price that renntec sell them at. as far as I know the 98 to 2003 models share the same grab rail mount. can you guys give me a measurement between the two holes one on 98 and 02 or 03 model I will need to know soon as I've got my eye on a cheap grab rail. Re: racks/backrest etc - Paulfzs - 22-02-15 id like a rack that sits a bit further back, mines got a bar thats right at the end of the pillion seat so not comfy for pillion Re: racks/backrest etc - johnakay - 26-02-15 I could do that for you paul. I will need more info. renntec has 2 advert for racks ....... 1st fit models 98 to 99. 2nd 00 to 03. one on ebay not rack but grab rail state fit models 98 through to 03. what I need to know is are they all the same? hole fitment. Re: racks/backrest etc - johnakay - 26-02-15 here are some pictures to give you guys some ideas of what I can make.. these are for the new CB500's also other models. I can get them in powder coat in any colour (just about) and chromed. I also make for classic bikes too. ![]() Re: racks/backrest etc - johnakay - 26-02-15 only take one? ![]() Re: racks/backrest etc - johnakay - 26-02-15 and another... ![]() Re: racks/backrest etc - Paulfzs - 26-02-15 the one on my 98 fzs 600 ![]() Re: racks/backrest etc - darrsi - 26-02-15 Renntec racks are not designed to take weight at all. I had the sports rack in Paul's picture, and put a top box on it which overtook me one day as i slowed down to go through a 6' 6" barrier, it literally flew past me as the rack just snapped clean in half. That particular rack has a recommended weight limit of only 5kg. You have to take into account things like speed bumps, that i go over daily, which over time finds out the weak spots in them. Re: racks/backrest etc - Paulfzs - 26-02-15 yeah the one i posted is broken on the bar that attaches to the grab rail bolt, its snapped along the bolt hole... ive had 15kg of lead in mine and the rack knew about it ! im yet to have any serious problems with it other than the lack of bars for mounting my topbox which means my topbox came loose and almost fell off. Re: racks/backrest etc - rhinoeli - 26-02-15 I have the same one as Paulfzs has. There is a E52 case with backrest on it. Heavy loads, 10kg+ sometimes. No problems yet. Re: racks/backrest etc - johnakay - 26-02-15 that is the weakest point. it should have had a brace of sort on the side. similar to this one in the picture below. I've had customer contacted me if I could repair or make a new rack in place of renntec's. after all these years you would have thought they would know about metal fatigue etc. none of mine ever snapped only the very early ones. tubings that I used are 20mm x 2mm wall ![]() Re: racks/backrest etc - Paulfzs - 26-02-15 i use a 58 litre topbox on my fazer and usualy fill it with 5kg-15kg of stuff most days... Feel free to make a rack that doesnt flex and can handle it ill happily review it ![]() Re: racks/backrest etc - johnakay - 26-02-15 before I can do anything,I need to know if the holes are the same on all fazers 98 to 03. Re: racks/backrest etc - Paulfzs - 26-02-15 iirc theyre exactly the same Re: racks/backrest etc - Paulfzs - 26-02-15 (26-02-15, 09:09 PM)Paulfzs link Wrote: iirc theyre exactly the same 1998-2003 grabrail so the same http://www.fazerspares.com/items/129-1_3120-grab-rail-metal.htm Re: racks/backrest etc - johnakay - 26-02-15 paulfz have you still got the snapped rack? this so that I get the right height. Re: racks/backrest etc - Paulfzs - 26-02-15 yes ive still got it, its still attached to my bike lol ![]() epoxy resined to hold it together Re: racks/backrest etc - infiniteloop - 26-02-15 Interesting post…I was wondering about a sissy-bar for my '98 Fazer 600, do they exist..? My girlfriend rides pillion now & again but she likes the top box on the bike as she can rest against it, but I hate the top box so would be interested in a back-rest or sissy-bar Re: racks/backrest etc - stevierst - 27-02-15 I've made racks for a couple of guys on here, and I can say that the mounting points are all the same for the Fzs600 regardless of years. I used box section rather than tubing, and toyed with the idea of using support struts going from the rear of the rack down at 45 degrees to the swivel bungee rings below the tail light. You could pretty much load it up with anything then without fear of breakage. (had a Renntec fail on me too!) The one I made for my Thundercat uses this, and I load it up with a Hell of a lot of kit! I be just had a look, but I've deleted the pictures of the mock up I did for it. Worth a thought for your next design. The 5kg weight limit would include the weight of the box as well, not just what's inside the box. I realise 5kg is probably a little bit over precautious but if you Google "renntec rack snapped" you'll see it's a common occurrence. I use the Givi monorack bars now which have two mounting points rather than just the one, and are certainly designed more to take the heavy weight of a top box. You have to take into consideration braking, accelerating, braking, accelerating, speed bumps, pot holes, cobbled roads, going off a kerb, etc, the constant momentum puts a lot of strain on these lightweight racks, even worse still if you have someone resting their back on the top box! |
