Oxford Hot Grips removal tips please. - noggythenog - 20-02-15

i had hope that removing these would be as easy as removing normal grips ie a screwdriver and a bit of lube.

A quick look on google reveals lots of problems trying to remove them.

But foc google, it is foccers adice i want :faz

ANyone have any hints n tips.

I dont atually need them, i just need the switch gear etc for the Renthals so if it comes to destroying them off then what would be a good method without damaging anything else.

Hope someone knows something...i have every confidence 8)

Personally I've never had issues removing them, but if they're not wanted then just attack them with a Stanley knife surely!?

Good to know stig, i just ask because i never fitted them and so im not sure what glue was used but with a bit of luck the might just come off the traditional way, i thought they had a hard collar or something inside them that might be tricky to get through and i dont want to damage the throttle tube.....but ill try the scredriver & lube to start with.

Get a hairdryer on the grips and prise off with a small flat blunt screwdriver. Shouldn't give you any probs with a bit of heat n patients

Thanks guys, managed it easy enough, little screwdriver went through the rubber once on each side......i take it that means they are now goosed or would they be of any use.....not like you can see the holes to be honest.

Anyway if they are goosed im not fussed im just happy they came off easy enough.

Off to foccin work now but cant wait to get this bad boy bike modded up on my days off. 8)

They'll still work but im just not sure if a couple of tiny holes in the grip rubber would render them useless ie water getting in and through to the element or whatever, doesn't bother me much but if someone said they wanted them id probably give them away but id hate to be a good egg doing that and them end up with something that fries the first time they use them

Why did you decide to take them off? Surely better to have kept them as a 'just in case'

being a bit OCD really.....Im going for more of a clean look on the handlebars and replacing them with some ape hanger Renthals in Gold and I have some new Renthal grips to go on.

I wont deny I've used the hot grips a few times because I've had them but I don't plan on doing as many miles this year with the mini nog and I also don't plan on being caught in so much shit weather so im happy to do without the hot grips.

plus I've heard of folk having electrical niggles with having hot grips fitted, worth the risk if I was riding all year round but not with my limited riding.

P.S - I used penetrating fluid down the inside of the grip, I've already mentioned lube and a screwdriver so I may as well mention a bit of penetration for those exup types :lol

& just incase anyone else looks at this in future....I found (after id stabbed holes through the grip :rolleyes) that a bit of a prise between the grip inner end and the switch gear (carefully) and doing this around the circumference was good for breaking the seal on the glue.

I couldn't do without my heated grips, they're one of the best features on my bike as an all year round rider.
